Sparky's Flaw has its roots in Charlottesville, Virginia, where the group honed its poprock sound equal parts Maroon 5 and the Fray, with an emphasis on acoustic guitar and affable vocals while attending the University of Virginia. Comprising members William Anderson (vocals, guitar, keyboard), John Stubblefield (drums), Christopher "Kit" French (saxophone), Alex Hargrave (bass), and Nate McFarland (guitar), the quintet initially formed during the members' high school years. Their first year at U.Va. saw the freshfaced bandmates opening for Robert Randolph and generating a healthy amount of buzz, which lead to the popularity of the independently released One Small Step EP in 2005. Sparky's Flaw subsequently partnered with Red Light Management, the same management company as Dave Matthews Band, and were signed to Smash Records (an imprint of the recently revived Mercury Records) by Summer 2007. An eponymous EP followed that August, as the bandmates entered their final year at U.Va..
