    Pros: Style of Singing

    Cons: The Beats

Lloyd, member of Murder Inc., impresses with his debut. Its not like a normal R&B album. He has a unique style of singing, mixing the streets with a unique voice. His latest joint "Southside" feat. Ashanti has been getting alot of airplay. ...It was even the #1 video on 106 and Park for about 2 weeks! Another hot joint is called "Hey Young Girl" feat Ashanti once again. "Hey Young Girl" is the song that Irv Gottti, CEO of Murder Inc. records, said made him decide to sign him. Since this is an album off the Murder Inc. label, be sure to hear plenty ( and I mean plenty) of tracks produced by Irv Gotti himself.) Thats why I said the beats might be a con because I couldn't imagine any other well known producers contributing to this album other than Irv and other not-so-well-known and underground producers that are linked with Murder Inc. Its not a perfect album but If you want a good listen from beginning to end, then you should cop this CD. Read more Less

The sexy and cut Lloyd got his start in teen pop singing with NToon, a group the singer was never really "down with." NToon was put together by former Klymaxx member Joyce Irby, whose name shows up again here, right next to The Inc's main man/Godfather, Irv Gotti. Gotti sent Lloyd to the gym before the recording studio, the press releases have hailed him as singer who adds a hiphop attitude to RB, and his interview with Teen People hit before his debut album. Sounds contrived, and while there are no "deep" moments on Southside, the glittery production is alive and inspired and Lloyd's cool persona never fails. Vocally he's a lighter R. Kelly, occasionally dipping into a lower register when he really wants to seduce and adding enough drawl to make him the choice of teen bedrooms south of the MasonDixon line. Say what you want about the alwayscontroversial Gotti, but he never gives Lloyd anything lyrically out of his reach, and musicwise he's sprinkled a bunch of clever samples over the ...downlow beats. Using bits of Fleetwood Mac's "Little Lies," Slick Rick's "Hey Young World," and Willie Hutch's "Brothers Gonna Work It Out" are the smart and fun touches that can keep Moms and Dads bumpin' while their daughters swoon (course they may be a little put off that this crooner hasn't met a curse word or drug reference he doesn't like). His sensual duet with Ashanti on "Southside" couldn't be better crafted while "Ride Wit Me," "Hey Young Girl," and the lone crunker, "Trance," are nearly as good. Southside should satisfy most Right On readers, but if you've graduated to The Source or Vibe you might want something a bit more substantial. - David Jeffries, All Music Guide Read more Less

Biography

Lloyd

Urban crooner Lloyd topped BET's play list singing a steamy duet with Ashanti, but he got his first spins on the anything but steamy Radio Disney. Born January 3, 1986, in New Orleans but raised in Atlanta, Lloyd joined NToon the teen pop group put together by Klymaxx's Joyce Irby in 1996 and appeared on their 2000 album, Toon Time, released by Dreamworks.
