The South Will Rise Again results from the late '90s revolution of Southern rap artists appearing out of nowhere on small independent labels, hoping for a No Limit-like path to success. Unfortunately, for as much as critics complain about the diluted quality of the No Limit camp circa 2000, many of the tracks on this compilation make Master P's soldiers sound like craftsman. Granted, there are a few noteworthy productions on this compilation that show exactly why those outside of the South began paying attention to this former niche in first place. In particular, Indo G and Gangsta Boo's "Remember Me Ballin'" and Goodie Mob's "Soul Food" represent the potential talent formerly ignored; however, these two tracks are by far the exception. For the most part, the other artists here merely derive their themes and sounds from already proven Southern artists such as Mannie Fresh and his Cash Money Millionaires, Master P and his 504 Boyz, or Three Six Mafia and their Hypnotize Camp Posse. - Ja...son Birchmeier, All Music Guide Read more Less
