Siblings Rachel Washington, Joshu'a Washington, and Je'Kob Washington became Souljahz after blending the concept of being soldiers for Christ with Jah, the Hebrew word for God. In the mid-'90s, the trio began to perform its upbeat blend of hip-hop, urban soul, and pop at churches throughout its native San Diego.
