    Music:

    Well Rounded Compilation

    By __A_YAHOO_USER__  Feb 11, 2006

Pros: A good mix of both hard to find and classic material otherwise out of print

Cons: Could be extended into a bigger boxed set package

Generally speaking I am more of an album buyer and wouldn't recommend a various artists compilation. But 'Soul Hits Of The 80's' is an exception to the rule.Seeing as the 1980's marked a return to single oriented music in soul and ...R&B this budget priced compilation is a great investment.Except for the Luther Vandross,Teena Marie and Herbie Hancock cuts (which are of course excellent) most of the 40 songs presented here are from CD's and albums that are out of print. In fact some of the material is ultra rare. And they range from pure soul, ballads, electro hits, funk and even a little early New Jack swing.Among them are three excellent funk tunes in Brick's driving "Sweat (Til You Get Wet",Enchanments sassy "I Know Your Hot Spot" and Billy Ocean's elegant "Nights (Feel Like Gettin' Down"-all from 1981-82.And I can't argue with any compilation that would have "Let's Hear It For The Boy","Juicy Fruit","Shake You Down","Easy Lover",(The Manhattans) "Shining Star" and "Save The Overtime (For Me" all on the same collection. Some of the songs here surprised me since I'd never heard them-Marvin Gaye's high jamming "Sanctified Lady",Isaac Hays heavy "Love Attack" and the moving "Caravan Of Love".Spanning the entire decade (except for Cheryl Lynn's 1993 recording "Encore"-a great jamming number)and does it by including all the songs in their original full lengh album versions and with superb remastered sound quality.A great collection of songs for anyone looking for a great selection of songs from this era of R&B music. • All Music Guide

A budget 3 CD set, Soul Hits of the '80s collects some of that awkward decades soul moments from the Columbia/Sony catalog. Note the author's use of "moments" and the title's use of "hits," because they are, in fact, talking about the same songs. Not everything here was a hit, with some of the songs just squeaking into the Billboard Top 100, however regardless of chart position they do represent the era very well. There's a broad range of work here from jazz crossovers like Stanley Jordan with "Heaven Sent You," and Grover Washington with "Summer Nights" to straight pop crossovers like Deniece Williams with "Let's Hear it for the Boy" and the classic and true hit "Easy Lover" by Philip Bailey Phil Collins. Other actual chart toppers here include "Juicy Fruit" by Mtume, Herbie Hancock with the seismic hit "Rockit and one hit wonder Johnny Kemp with "Just Got Paid." Luther Vandross, Teena Marie, Bill Withers, Babyface and Regina Belle are a few of the others whose tracks pepper this 40 ...() song collection. It's not definitive but does a fine job of representing just how broad soul music's reach had become in the '80s. - Wade Kergan, All Music Guide Read more Less
