Picked this up at the Planet of Sound, on Lincoln by the Western Ave. Brown Line stop here in Chicago. I got a great LP-length cd, "the Sophtware Slump," b/w an EP-length cd, "Through a Frosted Glass," only $11.99! What a deal! The dude behind the... counter said, "uh, this is brought to you courtesy of ME - i was at the show and they had these available, even though you can't get them through a distributor. i picked up a ton of them." bully for him, bully for me, gotta get a raincheck on seeing G-daddy live."The Sophtware Slump" adroitly addresses some of humanity's disconnection from itself and its creations at the dawn of the third millenium. If you want to skip the message, though, you can bliss all over yourself with floating melodic hooks and fun, funky music made from sounds of unknown origin. "Through a Frosted Glass" is more of the same, lovely music, minus the moral of the story.Grandaddy are poised to explode with their next release, and to put an American voice in the musical mouth of social commentary that seems to be the sole bailwick of Radiohead. They are no Radiohead, however, and i don't think they want to be; bully for them, bully for us. Read more Less

Pro Reviews: Sophtware Slump [Bonus CD]

  • All Music Guide

Picking up where their Signal to Snow Ratio EP left off, Grandaddy's wittily named second album The Sophtware Slump upgrades the group's wry, country-tinged rock with electronic flourishes that run through the album like fiber-optic lines. Arpeggiated keyboards sparkle on "Hewlett's Daughter" and "The Crystal Lake," and wind, birds, and transmissions hover around the songs' peripheries, suggesting a Silicone Valley landscape. Jason Lytle's frail, poignant vocals provide a bittersweet counterpoint to the chugging guitars and shiny electronics that envelop him like a cockpit or a cubicle on "Chartsengrafs" and "Broken Household Appliance National Forest" and set the tone for melancholy ballads like "He's Simple, He's Dumb, He's the Pilot," "Miner at the Dial-a-View," and "Jed the Humanoid," the story of a forgotten, alcoholic android. Lost pilots, robots, miners, and programmers try to find their way on The Sophtware Slump, an album that shares a spacy sadness with Sparklehorse's Good Mo...rning Spider and Radiohead's OK Computer. Though it's a little more self-conscious and not quite as accomplished as either of those albums, it is Grandaddy's most impressive work yet and one of 2000's first worthwhile releases. [There is also a special edition that was released in the US with a bonus CD attached, featuring six bonus tracks: "First Movement/Message Fade," "Our Dying Brains," "What Can't Be Erased," "Wives of Farmers," "Street Bunny," and "XD-Data II"] - Heather Phares, All Music Guide Read more Less

Grandaddy

Solar-powered space-pop combo Grandaddy was formed in Modesto, CA, in 1992 by singer/guitarist/keyboardist Jason Lytle, bassist Kevin Garcia, and drummer Aaron Burtch; although a noisy, lo-fi approach characterized early recordings like 1994's Complex Party Come Along Theories, with the 1995 additions of guitarist Jim Fairchild and keyboardist Tim Dryden the group's sou... Read more
