Pros: Nothing To Write Home About
Cons: Where Do I Start
1. Awful remote
2. Slow finalizing
3. Slow eject
4. Unreliable eject -- sometimes I'll have to ask the unit to eject a disc 10 or 15 times before the player responds although it makes sounds
5. Never had problems with Sony products... have an older, better DVD player. I won't be inclined to be loyal to Sony anymore after buying this piece of junk
Pros: Huge remote is hard to lose
Cons: Recording confusing
If you are in the market for a DVD player, there are cheaper ones out there that do as good of a job that cost around $25. If you are looking for a DVD player/recorder, go somewhere else. This is a confusing setup and the remote is the size of a cricket bat. My suggestion to anyone looking at buying this unit is to also buy about 100 high quality DVDs because you will waste most of them trying to get the DVD recorder to work.
The 100 page manual is one of the most confusing manuals I have ever tried to read and there are times it contradicts what the Easy setup guide indicates.
One of the tech reviewers in the local paper said he took this unit back because he couldn't figure out how to set it up and recommended buying a Lite-On. He stated it wasn't as confusing and actually worked, but felt the quality wasn't as good as a Sony. If a guy who reviews equipment for a living is confused setting it up, the average layman will struggle with this.
Pros: It works.
Cons: SLOW, among other things.
The Sony RDR-GX315 works, but I am very disappointed with the following: 1) All operations are VERY SLOW (such as getting the DVD tray to open), as if the player is running a really bloated computer program to control its features. 2) When you press the Pause button, play does stop, but only for about 5 minutes or so, and then resumes again on its own. I hate this! When I pressed Pause on my old player, it stopped and remained stopped for as long as I wanted (and displayed a screen saver after 5 minutes or so). I thought this might be a configurable thing, but it isn't. 3) When you press the "next scene" button, it skips the first fraction of a second of the audio portion of that scene.
My old Sony DVD player (which could not record) was much faster and had none of these problems (using the same DVDs of course).
I get the sense that Sony was in so much of a hurry to manufacture this product that they didn't do a lot of QA. I bought it because of the name......now I regret my decision. I'll choose a different brand next time.
