Pros: Sound quality, User Friendly, Storage
Cons: Sony's restrictive downloading policies
I've had my L'il MDLP for 4 years. The more storage I need the more discs I can buy. 20 discs give me 20G. Long battery life. Easy to carry due to small size. It sounds awesome when hooked up to a big home system. So much technology for so little $$...
Pros: Yeah the i.POD has been marketed better than the HI.MD from Sony, but that has nothing to do with the quality of sound, features, unlimited storage space and fast transfering ability that Sony has with their product.
Cons: People say that the i.pod has games on it... woop de do. use your phone and play snake.
I think the most important factors needed in portable audio is fantastic sound quality (ATRAC3+, which is more advanced than MP3), Durability and Decent battery life. May i say that you can never run out of starage space with this MiniDisk player. Each disk hold 1GB... 45 hrs of music. If you fill that up, go and buy another one. they are only AUS$10. People say "I dont want to carry around all the disks!" Can you honestly tell me where you are going to go where its going to take up 45hrs of listening time. You can fly around the whole world and not listen to the same song twice. Come on now. You can jump on these disks and they wont break which means you will NEVER lose your data. Drop an i.pod and you will probably lose all your music!!! The battery life of the HI.MD is over 20 hours. Beat that i.pod!! it only takes a single AA battery. None of this 8hr stuff and then having to recharge it for 3 hours like the i.POD. Think about it.
Pros: Sony has other models
Cons: Many... Let's count 'em
Ok...
The the thing that makes Minidiscs cool is that you can record from the outside world via a mic or line in. THIS unit does not have those, but other MD units do. Other than that, which is great for field recording in a compact unit, I HIGHLY recommend the iPod.
First and foremost, the software that Sony provides for hookup to your PC (only) is clunky at best and bug ridden heaps of junkola at worst. On numerous downloads, the resulting audio would have drop outs or the transfer wouldn't even follow through.
Second, the controls. Their great if your hand is as large as an old GI Joe. Otherwise, anyone with human hands will find it extremely unintuitive to guide through the tiny screen.
It is my opinion that Sony (now on numerous accounts) have missed the boat. They seem to be going for a hip market when the core of people who actually use Minidiscs are geeks like me that record out in the field (say, a band or sound effects.) I would say if those options are what your looking for then another model (800 or 900 series) may be better.
To be fair, I should say I own a 3rd Gen iPod. For just listening to music and having contacts and calender functions, it really is the best on the market. The hype is right..amazing. For field recording, then the MD unit.
Also, a good reference to look at is Minidisco.com
They have the models even from Sharp (very cool by the way), and competitive prices.
Contrary to what the other reviewer said, I have never had problems with the iPod syncing to either my PC or Mac.
Pros: good wen running
Cons: mp3s
i have this sony minidisc player. it comes with some software for your computer but you cant burn mp3's on the mini disc without buying the full version of the software. and it took me forever to figure that out, i dont like it because it is so difficult just to burn songs on the mini disk.
also wen i work out the cord on the headphones are too short so somebody like me definitly has to buy new headphones, and there is no clip so i have to stick it in my pocket or wear a
Pros: Lightweight, portable, amazing sound
Cons: None!
I originally planned on purchasing the iPod however I kept hearing from everyone how much trouble they caused if you didn't have an Apple computer, and by pure luck I came across the Sony MD. I was skeptical at first but this thing is amazing, it plays 45 hours of music with amazing sound quality. It's lightweight, easy to use and sets up fairly easily. Also unlike the iPod, it has 25 hours of battery play instead of having an irreplaceable rechargeable battery which only plays for 8 hours and is easier on your budget.
