Pros: 1080i HD, HDMI, 5.1 surround sound out via coax.
Cons: None that come to mind, not even the 194lb weight!
The main reason I bought this TV (Sony KD-34XBR970) was to get into the HD world with a true and tried system at a reasonable price. I plan to wait it out on the other TV formats (ie; LCD, Plasma, DLP) until after the 2009 broadcast change over. Maybe by then the newer flat panel TV's will be better and lower in price IMO. I have read that some believe that the picture is not as sharp/crisp as Plasma/LCD or even the SFP of the XBR960 TV's. I can not see that big of a diff. w/ my eyes to justify spending 2x as much yet!
OTA HD broadcast looks great and SD or the old analog broadcasts look really good too (crystal clear in my area w/ my home made antenna). The blacks are black and colors PoP, no bleeding like I see on too many Plasmas and LCD's plus no lag at all. I also have sound from the TV hooked up my 7.1 receiver via coaxial and 360 via TosLink (optical). No lip sink issues either.
Plus with the money I saved going the CRT route, I was able to buy some other things our family wanted and needed (a very nice used car, new washer and drier, scanner for the PC and Food hehe). The weight is a plus, as I see it. Maybe Mr. Robber will pass up my Beast of a HDTV for my neighbors slim and light flat panel HDTV. I also found a very good stand at WalMart for $59.99 and a matching A/V rack for the same price.
Have a great day all and enjoy what you have now. Life is short, when your # is up, it wont matter what TV or video players we have anyhow. Note ; This TV has been discontinued, if you can still find one I would definitely recommend grabbing it before they are all gone!Was this review helpful? OVERVIEW
First, the important part. This TV offers amazing reproduction of HD, DVD, and regular TV. It will provide a better picture of DVDs and TV than any LCD or Plasma, and the HD is comparable to the best LCDs and Plasmas out there.
COMPARISON TO THIN SCREEN TVs
I used to own (and loved) my full-screen WEGA TV. I sold it before moving across the country, thinking I would buy an XBR-series flat LCD. After spending all night trying to fix the image and color quality (even my DVDs looked terrible!) I did additional research.
What I found was that just about any LCD or Plasma greater than 30 inches will show pixel movement and reproduce colors poorly as compared to a tube TV. I was astounded to hear TV specialists admit to me that LCDs and Plasma did not compare in quality to the TV I had owned, with the exception of high quality HD content. I returned my LCD.
When I researched tube TVs, this Sony WEGA widescreen model was the clear winner in image quality and size. Unfortunately, Sony is no longer going to make this model, but you can still find it (and there are some great deals out there). Get it while you can, and wait out the flat screen craze until they have better image reproduction.
WEIGHT/SIZE
A word on size and weight. While this is a heavy TV, it is nowhere as heavy as my old WEGA. At 190 lbs, this is still something two reasonably in-shape people can lift out of the box.
You will need a decent stand (many are available, just check the depth carefully - I purchased the Bush TV Stand (VS53936) from Circuit City and love it). Also, the size works well with large speakers (something that thin screens don't work well with).
SOUND AND INPUTS/OUTPUTS
The sound quality is great, but for a TV like this you will want to run your sound through a high quality receiver. This TV has a great offering of inputs and outputs, including an HDMI input (but only one) you can use for your HD cable box or computer (if you are running Media Center or a similar PC-driven HD TV). There are two component inputs and plenty of other options as well.
MINOR DRAWBACKS
The Menu system is simple and intuitive, but I would like more detailed image controls, options, and settings. All the basics are there and some extras, but I miss the option of having specific settings for specific inputs, which this model lacks (and some LCDs offer). Not a big deal, since the quality is so superior anyway.
Like most TVs, the power switch on the front cannot be disabled against my children, which is a feature I would love to see.
CONCLUSION
If all you will do is watch the handful of available HD channels, or you have the money and inclination to just watch BlueRay disks, then perhaps go with a KDL-46XBR2. But if, like me, you love watching both regular TV, regular DVDs, AND HD, then this is the best TV you can buy. You will save a ton and be absolutely happy with the quality!

This TV is great. Circuit city currently have it for $649.99. I went to Sears and had them price match so it came down to $620 plus tax. I like it so much, i went back and got another one.

I love it! It gets HD channels without having to order HD channels. For that price is a great deal. Currently, they are going for $1200, but I was able to get it in San Marcos,California for $800 plus sales tax. The stand is extra and so is the extended warranty.
