Changing the notion that high-definition video recording is for "advanced videographers only" Sony offers the HDR-HC3 HDV 1080i Handycam camcorder. Compared to its predecessor, this new, high-def camcorder is 26 percent more compact, packed with easy-to-use features, and more affordable.

The camcorder will snuggle up comfortably next to your high-def TV with its HDMI output. Now the de facto standard in the consumer electronics industry for transferring high-def content, HDMI offers simple, one-cord connection to display devices so you can just plug and play instead of struggling with multiple cables.

Your own home movies recorded with the HDR-HC3 will stand up proudly next to your pre-recorded high-definition video. The new camcorder delivers superb high-definition picture quality and lighting detail on both video and digital still images.

The HDR-HC3 model features a professional-quality Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T lens and Sony's new ClearVid CMOS Sensor technology. This imager is engineered to boost picture resolution and clarity to deliver vivid colors and precise image detail. Combined with Sony's Enhanced Imaging Processor, it provides new and fun-to-use functions.

The camcorder shoots four-megapixel still images, stored on an optional Memory Stick PRO Duo media card, for easy transfer between compatible devices.

It has a dual record function that allows you to shoot video and simultaneously capture 2.3 megapixel stills (16:9) in high definition mode and 1.7-megapixel stills (4:3) in standard definition mode. You can also record slow motion video using the model's smooth slow record function, which plays back three seconds of video in 12 seconds - ideal for analyzing your golf swing or tennis back-hand.

For quick framing and easy image sharing, the camcorder has a 2.7-inch touch panel SwivelScreen LCD featuring Sony's new Clear Photo LCD plus technology. The LCD produces bright images with high-contrast that are easy to view in virtually any environment and at any angle.

Other helpful features include Super SteadyShot image stabilization, a built-in microphone for excellent audio quality, an intelligent built-in flash for well-exposed still images, and a supplied InfoLithium P battery for up to 90 minutes of continuous recording.

Dream 1080i HIGH DEF Camcorder from SONY

By Shanks  May 2, 2006 | 12 out of 13 found this Sony HDR-HC3 review helpful

Pros: STUNNING 1080i HIGH DEF WIDESCREEN 16:9 PICTURE

Cons: No external Microphone input jact 9though there is a hot-shoe for an external Microphone)

If you are looking for a true High Definition Camcorder and are not a professional this is the best CAMCORDER out there !!! The top 5 features that I love are : 1. Stunning 1080i widescreen High Defintion images when seen on my 60' SONY HDTV! ...2. Small size makes it perfect for shooting candid family scenes especially involving kids and pets. 3. Ease of use even for those technology-naive family members. There is a special 'EASY' button that makes the camera foolproof by restricting all the controls to the basics. Even my 8 year old can film without understanding all its features or reading the manual ! 4. Reasonable price for the amazing video quality. It compares with the picture quality of Sony's high-end Camcorder for considerably smaller sum of money. The picture quality is equal to the 1080i picture that I receive on my Directv "Discovery HD Theater" High Definition Channel!!! 5. Easy connectivity options to HDTV or my PowerMac !!! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED to all of you seeking a true High Defintion Camcorder that is easy to use and is portable and unobtrusive!!! Read more Less

    Best one around!

    By Mel W  May 19, 2006 | 7 out of 7 found this Sony HDR-HC3 review helpful

    Pros: Excellent picture quality

Cons: Price and lack of included accesories

I've had this camera for about a week and recorded over two plus hours of video. I am really impressed with the picture quality and it suits my SONY HDTV. The sound quality is great. I can only see the need for "special" mics if you'...;re shooting from 30+ feet away and need the boom mic or the bluetooth mics. Overall, excellent features and I like the fact that it's compact! My gripes: 1. No Pro Duo card included. C'mon, a 256 or 512 MB doesn't cost that much. 2. Has most of the cables but it has no S-video, no IEEE cable for computer and HDMI cable (which is costly) but at least the component cables are included... I guess thats acceptable. 3. The battery life seem to be shorter than 1.5 hours when using the LCD screen. Who records without using the LCD anyway? 4. Last, any accesorries you want are expensive. Read more Less

First Look: Sony's Slick New HD Camcorder

The HDR-HC3 brings high-definition video recording to the masses. The 1080i high-def video that the HC3 records looks amazing, with sharp details and rich colors. In fact some video seems a bit too vivid at default settings, with a few colors appearing a little too bright. I also noticed occasional fringing (blurred edges) on some fine details. But these nitpicks aside, the fact is, if you put the HC3's video side by side with video shot using a standard-definition camcorder, you'll never want to go back to SD. Read more

The HC3 sets the industry standard in resolution quality with its ClearVid CMOS Image Sensor, capturing precise detail and superior color reproduction. Now you can record what you want however you want it. The HC3 is everything youve come to expect from the world's smallest and lightest consumer camcorder (as of February 1, 2006). Read more
