    DVDirect review

By Randy  Jun 17, 2005 | 7 out of 7 found this Sony DVDirect VRD-VC20 review helpful

Pros: Easiest way to make a DVD

    Cons: LCD is too small

Cool product. I have the original DVDirect but this new one is much better. The DV input makes burning DVD's from my camcorder trival. I used to be nervous about burning disc because I would always have to test them before storing the disc away. ...Now, it works perfectly every time. The Nero software is a big help. It did not come with the old DVDirect and this is a big improvement. My only complaint is the LCD screen is a little small to read the screen without taking off my glasses and getting up real close. A bigger LCD would be helpful but not critical. Once you have used it a couple of times you never need to read the LCD as carefully. Thank you Sony for making my life so much easier. I was thinking of getting one of the HP Moviewriter products before this came out but Sony's DVDirect blows HP away. Read more Less

    Just Love This Sony !!!

By RANDALL  Sep 2, 2005 | 3 out of 3 found this Sony DVDirect VRD-VC20 review helpful

Pros: Ease of Use, Can be used as either PC DVD drive or stand-alone recorder

Cons: Slightly inconvenient chapter divisions when recording directly from video source

Wow. A week a go I had a really bad experience with a DVD recorder. I did a little more homework, and found this unit. I couldn't be happier. I've only had it a few hours and I already made a DVD from video I had already captured to my hard d...rive, and recorded a whole tape from my camcorder using the DV connection in stand-alone mode. The Nero software is easy, and slick. I have used the auto-sense chapter divisions and was reasonably happy with where it marked chapters. The menu setup was smooth and intuitive. I was surprised at the length of time it took to recorde the video from the PC's disk - but I might have a device on the USB that is slowing it down to USB 1 speeds - I still have to check that out. Recording in the stand-alone mode only allows you to select chapters by time (5,10,15 minutes) or by manually hitting the record button again. It would be nice if it dropped a chapter division when the camera went through a spot on the tape where recording p Read more Less

    Sony DVDirect DVD Burner

If you dont already have a DVD burner, chances are its because youve been waiting for a drive like the DVDirect: one that makes converting analog sources to DVD-Video truly effortless; one that supports disc-burning speeds that exceed what most folks can afford in media anyway. It should be noted, however, that recording an analog signal direct to DVD with this device, but without a PC, can be done only with the DVD+R format. This will produce discs that are compatible with fewer older set-top DVD players than DVD-R discs are. The drive also lacks a FireWire port (yes, we know that creating DVDs from FireWire-equipped DV cams is already a breeze). And the DVDirect was unable to record any of our commercial VHS tapes, not even our aged Schoolhouse Rock compilation. But we can buy that on DVDnot so with our company-weekend videotape, which will now be around for a long, long time. Read more
