    Great Value

This drive is the best. I debated and looked for every review for dvdr before chosing this one. I am glad i did. I have thrown every possible recording options at this drive and have yet to make those awful coasters. Mainly used to backup vast DVD co...llection. I use a sony laptop (XP OS) with firewire connection and it works just as fast as an internal. Just flash the firmware and upgrade it too 4x write and thats it. READ DIRECTIONS CAREFULLY BEFORE DOING THIS!!!! GET IT YOU WONT BE DISAPPOINTED. Software included needs help but i never opened the installation disc. I used the new updated NERO to burn and Power DVDXP to view great combo a must have for this drive to work at its best potential. Read more Less

USB 2.0 and Firewire Did Not Work w/ Win 2000

By Byron in Long Beach  Apr 7, 2003 | 2 out of 2 found this Sony DRX500ULX External DVD+RW Drive review helpful

I purchased this drive direct from Sony - twice. The first one arrived with a dead power supply. Called Sony - took 30 minutes to convince them it was DOA (I mean totally.) Shipped it back - prepaid! (good), Sony would not replace, had to credit me a...nd re-order. Second drive would not work with Firewire (iLink) under Windows 2000, no matter what computer (all new models) I tried it with, including Gigabyte GA7-VAXP MB(on-board 1394 firewire), Adaptec Fireconnect 4300 board, Dell M50 laptop, Compaq Evo. USB 2.0 also did not work - only USB 1.1. Windows 2000 was totally up to date, with all Service Packs. Same for motherboard drivers and BIOS. Sony tech support: Call your comuter manufacturer. (this was Level 3 tech support!) Shipped it back. No more Sony, ever! Sign me disgusted. Read more Less

    Sony DRX-500ULX

Despite this one caveat, the DRX-500ULX is a first-rate product that will do the job for anyone who requires a portable, external rewriter or who must record both ""+"" and ""-"" media. We don't, however, consider its dual-standard capabilities a must-have feature across the board, since most late-model DVD drives can reliably read either type of disc. Given the Pioneer unit's superior performance and lower price, that drive is the better choice for most users. Read more
