I am tickled pink with this camcorder! At first it was overwhelming and hard to use, but once I went through the guide while playing around with the camera, I had no problem getting it. I TOTALLY recommend this to almost anyone!

Sony Handycam DCR-TRV480
With its ability to play and transfer your old tapes, the Sony Handycam DCR-TRV480 is an attractive choice if you're upgrading from an 8mm or Hi8 camcorder. But if you don't need 8mm or Hi8 compatibility, competing MiniDV cameras offer superior performance in much smaller packages. more... -

Sony DCR-TRV480 Camcorder Review
The color scheme of this model is a visual metaphor for this seemingly endangered medium; the shiny metallic silver houses the hybrid touch screen which is troublesome but impressive for a Digital8, while the dull dark no-flair gray holds the Digital8 mechanism. The most impressive innovation for... more... -
Sony DCR-TRV480 First Impressions Review
The $350, DCR-TRV480 has slightly smaller dimensions than last years DCR-TRV460, but it is still immense and bulky. The one great addition is the backward compatibility feature which allows the user to play older tapes and media. This is a great feature because it allows the user to playback old... more...

Pros: Everything
Cons: Fader
I bought this to replace/supplement a 10 year old HI8 Sony that is still going strong.
With the newer TRV480, I can play my older analog tapes right into my computer, and windows movie maker seemlessly conrols everything - then viola! a DVD!!
I have even played my VHS tapes THROUGH the TRV480 and made DVD's from them - no other analog-digital video converter needed. All I had to buy was a Firewire cable.
My only gripe is that the fader is only good for one shot - it has to be reset between each shot, unlike the 10 year old Sony that once it was set it stayed on.
ALSO- with tape I get 2 hours of recording vs 30 minutes on the digital media DV and stick cameras.
The extra bulk is well worth the extra, cheap recording media. ...
