I purchased this camera with the hope/expectation that it would be a good "low light" camera. As you may know, most digital camcorders in the price range don't perform very well in low light conditions. I tried various Canon, JVC and ...Panasonic brands, but this camcorder was considerably better in low light.Having said that, it's still a little disappointing in low light conditions. The picture comes out grainy and a bit unclear. Forget about the "night vision", it does not help the problem because you get no color when taping in this mode, so it is relatively useless for quality shooting. The slow shutter doesn't help either.Another problem is the battery life. I immediately purchased the Q91 battery and I'm glad I did. Again, the Sony outperforms most all other brands with respect to battery life, but you'd better be prepared to see the battery dwindle if your taping and viewing on the nifty 3.5" LCD.On the positive end, the outdoor shooting is incredible. Picture quality and sound quality are superb. User manual is excellent and support is available and useful if necessary. The software which accompanies the product is average. Certainly not for the advanced editing functions. Overall, I would recommend this camera HIGHLY, UNLESS, you expect superior low light filming. It's better than the rest, but still not great. Sony DCR-TRV38 First Impressions Camcorder Review

I'm very happy with the Sony DCR-TRV38. Priced at $900 I think it's the true sweet spot in the Sony camcorder line. It doesn't include any 'Network' functions which I don't think you really need and the upgrades of the DCR-TRV38 with a new body over the DCR-TRV33, DCR-TRV22 and DCR-TRV19 are significant. You are given a lot more manual control and in general the camcorder is much easier to use. I certainly would recommend the DCR-TRV38, over the lower DCR-TRV33 and probably over the more expensive DCR-TRV39. Read more
