I bought the camcorder to tape the incoming of my niece into this world. Ever since, I have taken video of her growing up for the past 1-½ years, and also taken friends wedding as well as mine. I love the picture quality and the features of the camera. Since I edit my own video, the IEEE 1394 is a great feature for me as well as how it is controlled via Adobe Premiere 6. I will suggest any beginner to get one before they spend $2,500 or more.

We are very happy with the camera. It's excellent in low light conditions, with external Sony battery powered mic the sound is great for recording live music (built in mic not good enough-too much distortion if loud).
Transferring to VHS is very good quality. I bought at Circuit City with 2 year warranty to avoid hassles. Avoid online sellers-they are doing bait and switch and very rude. Better to pay a little more at CC and avoid trouble. Overall a very nice camera!Was this review helpful? Yes - NoA very good and fun camera

Camera is perfect in size and has awesome features. Do not purchase if you want to use it for still images. Was very displeased when I saw the quality after transferring to CPU.
Also, BEWARE, watch out for all online Merchants. Sony products have a minimum base price so watch out for prices cheaper than sony's. Items could be imports with no US warranty and that is how they are sold so CheapWas this review helpful? Yes - Nosony TRV-17
this is a great camcorder. i looked around at a lot of different models in this price range. the only thing better is the sony model that takes a larger still image. this model comes with all the sony perks, AE, optical, and digital effects. there is exposure, white balance, manual focus (thank you!). i was wondering about the photos though. i don't have a great need right now for amazing digital photos, but the quality size on the camcorder says that it's 320x240. the image after transfer to the computer says that it's 640x480. i think it just doubles the pixel size or something. anyway it's a great camcorder, and has great computer support for the mac. i have used it to transfer files and capture using premiere and it's amazing at what it does. thank you sony.
no thank you the company i bought it from: AMDV.COM. these guys are cons. they sell you the product and then don't ship in the time they tell you. this is so they can call you up telling you you have to call them back immediately, under the pretense that they are double checking shipping info. when i called they didn't ask any of that, but instead tried sell me other accessories.
here's the best part. it turns out that someone in the company stole shipments of the truck and had them sent to themselves through their system. so my camcorder was stolen by someone in the company, and the last thing i heard was that the police were checking into it. when i called because i hadn't received the shipment the person i spoke with, who had very poor english (he was american though), told me it would be rushed to my house that afternoon and would arrive the next morning. it did not and i was told the next day that it would be arriving after the weekend. this is an example of not keeping promises/lying/incomplete inconsistent information. never deal with this company again. i don't care if this was just one customer, it was a combined failure and general mess up on every level of this purchase, and i am only greatful i received the product still encased in it's sony box.Was this review helpful? It is an excellent camera. Fits very easily on the palm and has great
fuctions. Only exception is sony's cheapest battery, that comes with it. It lasts only half hour with the LCD open. Sony makes you pay another 150 for an extended life battery. Was this review helpful? Yes - NoTRV17E

Handles well. Great movies and stills. I give it my "fits" rating, because it fills many needs for a family on a budget, who needs a good cam.

I parchased a DCR-TRV 11 earlier model. In less than a year of use. I already encountered problems. A little bit of moist inside the camera tape houseng, the tape eject mechanism won't open and a C23 code appears on the lcd screen. After it is being repaired by authorized service center the problem returns again after 2 months after I purchased an extended warranty from Sony
Beware, you cannot just take the camera to a local authorized service center. You have to call their toll free number. And they'll have their chosen service center to repair it. In this case I have to mail my camera to NY and I live here in CA. It took me five calls to Sony to finally have their chosen repair center respone, and sent me a box to mail my camera. Another month and a half wait just to get my camera back. I will never buy an extended warranty from Sony anymore.
Sony has a good product but the way they handle their extended warranty service is very bad. You have no choice.Was this review helpful? Yes - NoSuper camer, good value
i took my camera on a two-week driving trip and had a great experience with the trv17. the lcd is huge. the camera is loaded with features. my favorite was taking 'night vision' footage while riding space mountain at disneyland.
we used the camera is all types of situations: saturated light, low light, desert, beach. all good.
we bought a larger battery with seems to help.

Great Machine for the Money!!!! Takes great video and has some great features like MPEG & JPEG capabilities. Would recommend!!!!!
