    Not quite perfect

By Bob Cannard  Mar 22, 2004 | 350 out of 359 found this Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T1 review helpful

Pros: Small, sturdy, fast, responsive, versatile

Cons: Bad factory settings, camera shake, needs accessories

It's a lovely, well-made little thing (how can anyone complain about its weight? That's just a sign of how solid and robust it is - important for a camera that's going to live in my pocket) and it's remarkably versatile. A very appeal...ing point is that there's no waiting for the zoom lens to extend when the camera is turned on - the zoom mechanism is internal. But out of the box, it takes mediocre pictures. Lots of test pics showed that to take good quality pictures, it was necessary to change a few things: (a) switch to Program mode; (b) set the Exposure setting to "-0.3EV" so the pictures aren't washed out; (c) set the Sharpness (nothing to do with focus! "Sharpness" is an electronic con-trick that only does bad things) to "-" to make the pictures less grainy; (d) set the Speed to ISO 400 to reduce risk of camera shake - this may degrade picture quality but so far I haven't found that to be a problem; (e) when taking flash photos, adjust the flash power setting to avoid washed-out highlights. I also found it useful to change to spot exposure and focusing, though I'm still experimenting with this. Thankfully, the camera remembers all these settings between uses, including which menu was last used. The supplied 32MB card wasn't anything like big enough; an upgrade to a 256MB card gave 177 photos at 5Mpixel resolution and Standard quality. The docking station is really clunky and inconvient when on the move; buying a PCMCIA adapter made it possible to plug the memory card straight into the computer without having to carry around any accessories. The lack of a tripod bush is annoying in low light (which the camera is otherwise well equipped to handle), but it might be possible to build something that plugs into the multi-purpose jack on the bottom... Ultimately, if you want a nifty, versatile, fast-starting, responsive little camera that'll go everywhere with you, and you don't mind experimenting and making a few initial adjustments, this thing is pretty good. But if you need something that's going to be perfect out of the box, this isn't your camera. Read more Less

    Best of the Best

    By Amy  Mar 8, 2004 | 67 out of 78 found this Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T1 review helpful

Pros: size, strength and battery life

    Cons: none

I bought this cam in Singapore. Its screen is nice and large, which makes it easier to use. Its slide down shutter couldn't be more smarter. The buttons are placed quite intuitively. This is the best purchase i've made. Its a great camer...a to start off with if you are travelling. Battery time can last me for at least 3 days usage. Get a 256 card, you'll need it. Read more Less

    Pros: size

Cons: It's a cool camera but not a quality one

If you want a small camera that's easy to carry, this might be the one. But the lens is not enogh for 5.1 megapixels, and the flash is also too small, in some occasion the" red eye reducer" is not working........

    DSC-T1

    By Noel  May 27, 2004 | 34 out of 38 found this Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T1 review helpful

Pros: Compact and lots of advance features

    Cons: Very Poor Picture Quality

I got excited when I've seen all the great reviews for this camera so I bought one even if I already have 5 high end digital camera's. One thing I've notice is the quality of the picture, too grainy even with brigthly lit exposure and eve...n worse when use at night or low light environment. My son's 2 Megapixel camera takes better picture than this model. I've played with all the settings, from auto to manual but did not improve to my satisfaction. So I emailed Sony Corp for help 2 months ago, indicating my problem and a possibility of a defective unit but so far they have not responded until now.I've had other similar experience with Sony's tech support and they are the worst. It's a gem of a camera

    By Boaz  Aug 1, 2004 | 15 out of 18 found this Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T1 review helpful

Pros: Size, design, features, large screen, ease of use, great video capabilities, damn cool

Cons: A bit of a weak flash, price

Had this slick camera for over a month now. I got cought in Vegas without a camera and decided it was time for me to enter the digital era.Being in Vegas meant taking many pictures in the dark. Results were amazing. For landscape picture in the da...rk (flash not activated), it captures light from far far away with excellent quality. For portrait pictures with a flash, the only problem is that the flash is a bit weak, as many have pointed out. But, you can choose a higher flash level, which solves most of the problem. In addition, once you learn to play with the seven preset picture options, you learn which option to use for what conditions, to receive satisfying results, so I wouldn't worry to much about it.During the day - just amazing (!) pictures, trust me. If someone complanis about the T1's image quality, he realy has a superman's vision. it's just great. And there are all the cool features (rapid shoots, adding voice to a picture, brown and white photos for 'old' look and much more), which take some time to learn, but once you read the manual, its just fun to have. and most important - let's not forget the size. I used to have a canon EOS 500 to take 'semi-pro' / artistic pictures. The result is that I never carried my camera around except for long trips. Once you have this tiny camera which goes into your back pocket and follows you anywhere, it makes you wonder whether you will ever settle for anything bigger, no matter how good it is...A bit on the expensive side, but if you live in NY, a quick stop to canal street will see the camera go for $430 ($60 less than what I paid at Best-Buy) - great value.GO and get it! I love this camera

    By Emily  Apr 15, 2004 | 13 out of 14 found this Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T1 review helpful

Pros: 2.5 LCD, Slim, Manual Mode, Movie Mode

    Cons: Weak Flash

I love this camera. I was comtemplating between the Canon S500 and Sony, and I'm glad I went with this one. First and far most, I love the 2.5 LCD, and fact that this camera has the option of manual mode as well as auto mode enables a person to a...djust the picture qualities. I must say, though, the flash is weak when taking pictures in the dark...but, all you have to do is just adjust the flash level. One another thing, I don't really know how to play around with the manual mode, so ppl like me can't really take advantage of all those options...but if you know how to adjust the features, this is a great camera. By Alex  Mar 4, 2004 | 11 out of 12 found this Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T1 review helpful

Pros: Small in size is a must for me especially when I travel abroad

    Cons: Memory stick is expensive

I love my new camera. It looks very cute and the size is just perfectly fitted into my jean's pocket...that is very helpful when I travel abroad and don't want to carry a camera expose to the outside. If those memory sticks can be a little ...cheaper :( Read more Less

Most compact 5 meg. pix digital camera

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Mar 16, 2004 | 13 out of 17 found this Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T1 review helpful

Pros: Big LCD, Compact and Cool Histogram Function

Cons: Need to set the camera to manual to obtain an excellent-grade picture.

I gotta hand it to Sony for producing a very compact and light, easy to operate with "one-hand", simple digital camera for "digital camera dummy" like me.It is quite dear for first time buyers but you will love how compact this is... (please compare with other chunky cybershots) you will notice the difference straight away... Read more Less

    By quint  Mar 16, 2004 | 8 out of 10 found this Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T1 review helpful

    Pros: making movies

Cons: not enough zoom features and no night option

If you want to buy a small slim camera with high quality pictures and good movie features, than you have to buy this product. The only thing that Sony has to change is that when you want to put pictures into your computer, you have to use a craddle i...nstead of just only a cable. Read more Less

    Pros: Size, Features, Sony quality

    Cons: Price tag...

I just picked this camera up a few days ago & fell in love with it. The camera takes excellent pictures(still learning all the functions & settings). The size of the camera is great. The only con I had was the price tag. But then again I believe you ...get what you pay for, and I purchased something worth the money. Read more Less
