Some great features for the price

By Christian  Sep 16, 2008 | 7 out of 8 found this Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H50 Silver review helpful

Pros: Great value, great zoom, intuative controls, good in low light

Cons: fringing in some situations, slow start up time

I bought this camera because I was looking for something between your typical point-and-shoot and a dslr, both of which I already own. I am generally very pleased with the features and the quality of this camera. The controls are very intuitive for b...oth manual and automatic settings. The zoom is very impressive. I have been able to get extraordinary details in my shots that are too far away to see with my eyes, including mountain climbers on El Capitan in Yosemite and crater and sea detail on the moon! The image quality is very good with the exception of some fringing in bright sunlight or high-contrast situations. The camera is also very slow to start up but very responsive once it has started. For the most part this is an exceptional camera for the price. Read more Less

    Sony DSC-H50

By Aimee Ann  Aug 23, 2008 | 2 out of 3 found this Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H50 Silver review helpful

Pros: SUPER User-friendly, it's got Nightshot, and so many more!!

Cons: I still have to find out (Cam's 3 days old @ the time of writing)

Actually, this is the 2nd camera I bought. When I was still in college & I had limited cash, I got my parents an Olympus film camera. Well, we all know how film cameras are. You can't do trial-and-error shots, & you will have to spend on rolls of... films & having it developed afterwards if you don't have your own dark room. Well, for years I relied either on a camera phone or on other people's cameras. Camera phones cannot really give you a quality shot, unless you wanna spend around $600 or more on a high-end mobile phone and then lose it eventually to a blasted snatcher/pickpocket. Borrowing other people's cameras are okay but you can't just really do that forever. One: You could break it or lose it, which means you're gonna have to pay your friend back or have it replaced. Two: What if you're both in that long-awaited trip, you wanted to get a picture of this sunset/scenery but he/she's using it. You will definitely miss a lot of moments, right? So, I finally decided to get one for myself so that I can take pictures of whoever and whatever I want, and anytime I feel like it. Now, I feel relaxed & at the same time, proud that I'm in control of everything. This wonderful camera, Sony DSC-H50, is just something. I didn't expect it to be so user-friendly, or have those amazing effects I can do to my pictures! It's pretty much like a DSLR but way easier to use & it's even got a live feed, which is what I'm also mainly after. I don't have a 20/20 vision, and even with contacts or glasses on, it's hard to peek into the finder. Sony made it easy for people like me to enjoy photography! After all these years of waiting for that chance to get my first digital camera, I would say, Sony DSC-H50 was worth the wait! Read more Less

    Very nice camera

By Rasool  Jan 4, 2009 | 1 out of 1 found this Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H50 Silver review helpful

Pros: Superb image quality even in telephoto shoots.

Cons: No RAW shooting, no 1080 dpi video recording, no flash hot shoe

I bought it a few days ago, it is a very nice camera with superb image quality. It takes some time to get familiar with it though. For night shots it is better to use manual mode on low ISO 80 or 100 and higher flash intensity. Image stabilizer works... excellent. The zoom speed and quality is great too. The LCD is its another advantage.Cons The battery dies fast 70-80 images on manual mode. No RAW shooting, no 1080 dpi video recording, no flash hot shoe. Doesn't accept SD and as a result you have to connect camera to PC everytime for transfering files or you need to buy a memory reader. Its rivals Canon PowerShot SX10 IS and Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28However I am happy that I bought this one. Good use of my money

    By Philip  May 27, 2009

    Pros: 15x Zoom,

    Cons: Sony Batteries

This is my third digital camera. I first had a kodak which left much to be desired, next Sony w7, which was a good camera, I took over 4000 pictures with it. The problem was that I needed more zoom. You can buy lenses, but they don't really make ...much difference. This camera has been perfect from the get go. There were a few things to learn, but I have everything figured out. Let me make a generalization... Electronics made in china are junk. Much to my surprise, the sticker on the bottom of this camera reads 'Made in Japan'. I certainly hope that this will equate to better quality and stability over the years. I have already taken about 1000 pictures with my H50 so it's not like I just picked it up from Best Buy last night. Picture quality is good, there is a noticeable improvement over my old W7. The batteries get maybe 200 shots so be sure to get an extra ($50 from Sony) because you cannot buy cheap alkaline batteries at Walmart in an emergency. Read more Less

    Another Excellent SONY Camera

By Local User  Jun 1, 2008

Pros: Excellent picture quality and super zoom

Cons: Too confusing for my wife

This is my third digital camera. I originally purchased an Olympus in 2003 but found it's shutter lag unbearably slow for taking photos of my kids. I upgraded to a compact SONY (DSC-W5) and cured the shutter lag problem but found myself wishing f...or more zoom. I was considering the SONY DSC-H9 but them found that the -H50 was coming out in May. I watched Circuit City for in stock availability and a sale. I then used my AAA discount for additional $$ of. Overall, I paid ~$360 (tax included). This is a great camera. It's shutter lag is minimal and the long zoom is great. The smile shutter actually works, too! I've only had it about a week but find that all the features are great and easy to use. I definitely recommend this camera to anyone looking for a long zoom with short shutter lag and excellent picture quality. Read more Less
