Pro Reviews: Songs of Spiritual Uplift as Sung by Today's Sounds

EXPERT RATING:

From AMG Reviews

Only available as a vinyl 45 on Amarillo, the only release (thus far) by Today's Sounds is a true oddity. Comprised of four cover songs, it whizzes by quickly, yet it's still a fun and intriguing piece. The best song is their rendition of the early-'80s novelty hit "Pac-Man Fever," a tribute to the popular arcade video game. While the original relied heavily on new wave pop, T.S.'s version is a bit more stripped down (acoustic guitars adding a surprisingly nice touch), and its stupidly hilarious lyrics still tickle the funny bone all these years later. "Still Going Steady" merges Buddy Holly-like music with country vocals (Bostrom handles vocal duties throughout, something he never did with the Meat Puppets), while "Let's Turkey Trot" contains lighthearted lyrics over a punk rock drone. With its retro black and white album cover, strange liner notes and bizarre song selection, it's highly recommended to connoisseurs of Dr. Demento and Barnes and Barnes.
