The first "proper" solo release by Poison's Bret Michaels, "Songs of Life," is a guilty pleasure. Anthemic vocals topped with hookladen lyrics is a dangerous mix. The album opens with "Menace to Society" in which Michaels sings, "Some days I just wanna be/a menace to society/conformity they try to sell/makes me feel like raising hell." Simple and predictable? Sure but never the less addictive. Poison fans will take to "Bittersweet" and "Raine" (an ode to Michaels' daughter which recalls "Every Rose Has Its Thorn"). Michaels' "Songs of Life" may not be breaking any ground but it sure is fun.
