Pros: It's a classic
Cons: Will there be a new one soon?
This is truly George Michael's best work yet. I have been a long time fan of his work and still listen to his other works such as "Faith" and "Older". He is truly one of the best recording artists in music history. Hopefully, it won't be too long before we hear from him again.
It took me almost 4 years to realise what I've been missing by passing by this album in a music store. My initial reservation - an entire album of "old" songs' covers can't be really good. Gees, was I wrong! It's more than good - it's excellent!
The selection of songs provides for a smooth and fun listening experience.
The vocal sound - album truly reveals the range and ability of George's voice. Outstanding. The mood of the album - lyrical, but you can just hear George enjoying the singing. Although the songs are of jazz/blues type, George manages to maintain his-only funky style without any popmusic frills.
"Songs From the Last Century" is a dusted-off and polished-to-sparkle classics, done by the voice of a truly talented singer. A must for a mature music lover!
well George Michael is undoutbedly greatest
singer and song writer.
but this time he done lil bet change .
cannot disagree more, here's why:
1. George Michael has proven time and time again that he CAN write songs! Please refer to his first solo album and note that ALL lyrics and ALL instruments were composed and PLAYED by him - how many other artists can do that???
2. Songs have been recorded and re-recorded since music was invented, especially with jazz. His recordings in this albums just go to prove that he has an awesome, and more importantly, a very flexible voice. Again, how many artirts can do that???
3. Songs from the last century SHOULD be brought up over and over again, as long as the artist record them with due justice to the original, which is clearly the case with this album.
And for the record - I'm not a George Michael fanatic. Just have been enjoying his music and have taken a closer look once i've realized the quality of work that he has been doing.
Peace~
Songs that should have stayed in the last century ...
can't he write his own stuff ? this lacks originality ... there's plenty of better jazz out there.
By this album, George Michael once again proved to the whole world, that he is THE BEST!!! No matter what rumours have it, we are with you, George.

This album contains various songs from early 30's
to the 70's ,personally , I love the song "Roxanne"
most , it's so jazzy...."Roxanne" in that blowsy ,
bluesy style....It's so COOL !!
And the way that
George Micheal sang throughtout this album is great !!
is what this album is. i'm glad that my fellow george fans agree. i love when or where and brother can you spare a dime. i just hate the fact that this cd, like almost everyother this year that has been good music, will be ignored by the general public. but that's alright because their lose is my gain, let'em have britney spears, give me george and the artist anyday. peace
George with this album confirms his change of
attitude towards music introduced with the CD "Older". A
mature man and singer casts his style on fancy songs
from the early 30`s to the end of the 70`s with
Sting`s "Roxanne". A spot apart for the moving "Miss
Sarayevo".
A great album, but George had better not quote
Ricky Martin...
In his liner notes, Phil Ramone writes that it is the song that is the survivor. And he's right. Well-written, stirring melodies are timeless. I wish more modern rock/pop singers would dare to interpret the work of earlier writers in a serious manner. Modern-day covers of earlier songs tend to rob them of their essential lyrical structure and re-package them closer to today's more rhythmically based music. George Michael performs these pieces as SONGS--beautiful works of music that are meant to be caressed by the voice.
once again george proves he is cabable of making you dance and cry. asure that he can make you float like a peice of wood on the water if he sings, cry if he only breaths.this last album to the previouses is like fruit on the cake. with songs that make you fell like the 60es that not all of us lived through, george says this album equals the whole century through
What a surprise album. Listening it, at first it didn't excite me... but now I love it. I'm sure that this is one of those albums that you can listen for years..decades..actually for centuries (if only it was possible). Probably critics say that "what is he trying to be..some kind of new Sinatra.." But I don't care, music shouldn't be taken too seriously.Only thing I need to know is that this sounds very good. FIVE STAR!
