Establishes TFF as my all time favorite

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Aug 28, 2001 | 1 out of 1 found this Songs from the Big Chair [UK Bonus Tracks] (Remastered) review helpful

I boguth the remastered edition of this album and what a purchase. I love this album. It's the heavy, atmospheric, big arena sound that I miss im music these days. (1 being the worst, 10 being the best)SHOUT: Their 1985 smash. This song is my favorit...e of their hit songs. Agressive lyrics, guitars, and atmospheric keyboards create the perfect rock song. Opens this album up with a bang. 10/10THE WORKING HOUR: AAWWW RRRYYYTTEEEEE! This is the winner on the record. F*** everything else. This one id their most brilliant songwriting ever. The keyboards are the best I,ve ever heard. God, I wish I could come up with a song with that kind of atmosphere. This should been lifted as a single. This song is the one that you must give a listen to. 10+/10EVERYBODY WANTS TO RULE THE WORLD: This song is their other big hit. Very heavy bass, drums and killer keyboards. I love the creepy airy atmospheric parts of the song. 10/10MOTHERS TALK: This song is rather angry in sound. Not my favorite but great anyways. 9/10I BELIEVE: Things calm down with this song. A slow quiet song with piano playing with some creepy background keyboards. It ends with those creepy keyboards that tie the ending of this song in the next song.BROKEN: This is a short but intense piece that samples Head Over Heels. This song kicks major ass! 10/10HEAD OVER HEELS: This is kind of a power ballad. This is their other major hit. The ending fades into a live performance of Broken which in my opinion add alot to this song. 10/10LISTEN: WHOA! This song scared me when I first heard it when I was a kid. Today it's one of my favorites. Very dark and spooky with an apocolyptic feel. The industrial noises combined with agressive guitars, strong synthesizers, and thundering drums make this song an underrated single. 10+/10THE BIG CHAIR: This is the B-Side of Shout. Very weird beats with sword sound effects. The guy screaming near the end is amazing. This song was inspired by some film that eludes me at this time. 8/10EMPIRE BUILDING: LOL!! I thought this was Art Of Noise. No strong melody, just clanging drums with funny sound effects that work well. I love the guitar echo that comes in at 0:42. This is the wierdest track TFF have ever written. Great though. 8/10 BROKEN REVISITED: This is a remix of Broken. It starts off with Rolands voice being distorted and warped giving a disturbing feel. It then gives away to a kind of watered down version of the original version. Cool song. 8/10THE CONFLICT: I love this quirky instrumental. Kinds funny. The bleeps are funny to listen to. 9/10MOTHERS TALK (U.S. REMIX): Alright! I like the original version alot but I love this version. It's a little jazzier but it doesn't ruin the song at all. It actually improves it! Kudos to this one. 10+/10SHOUT (U.S. REMIX): This version clocks at eight minutes. I must admit I like the original version more because the melody was stronger and more aggressive. I do like this version as well but not as much as the original. A good remix to close out this killer record.Clocking in at nearly 74 minutes, this is probably the best pop album I,ve ever bought. I will enjoy it forever. Even how I explained each song isn't enough to say really how great this album is. Go and buy it now. It's worth ever penny you spend. Read more Less

    A Rare Gem!

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Apr 7, 2005

Pros: All the songs are unique in their own way

    Cons: None

Very rarely you will find an album that is devoid of any filler tracks. "Songs from the Big Chair" is one such album. It consists of hits such as anthemic "Shout", the perfect pop-rock "Everybody Wants to Rule the World"... and "Head Over Heels". But the other tracks such as "The Working Hour" and "Listen" add such a beautiful and hypnotic feel that you will be left wondering why those two songs were not released as singles. "The Working Hour" is 100 times better than the overrated "Shout". It is a track that starts of as a jazzy number with saxophone. Then slowly the keyboard accompanies it. Then the percussion also joins... suddenly it is a different section and finally guitars join in and then you get all the instruments played in perfect synchronisation and justification. During this time and by the time Roland sings the songs there is a certain gothic effect. "The Working Hour" is fusion music at its best. Here is where you will hear jazz, rock, gothic music all blended into one. Finally, by the end it goes back in the reverse order from gothic to pop-rock and finally jazz with a perfect ending. The "Working Hour" is hands-down the most polished TFF song ever made! "Head Over Heels" doesn't sound complete without "Broken". It is actually a segue. A true prog-rock classic. The album's other gem apart from "I Believe" is "Listen". You just have to listen to "Listen". Again a fusion of Russian music and tribal African rhythms along with Curt's vocals and Spanish lyrics towards the end. Too good to even put into words! A perfect end to one of the greatest albums of all-time. Buy this album. You will not regret! Read more Less

    A Solid Effort

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Dec 3, 2002

This album showcases Orzabal's talents at their peak. Excellent writing and outstanding performances. Although they didn't have a truly deep and lasting career in the biz, TFF and Songs From The Big Chair is a great piece of work that captures the ...essence of the 80's brilliantly. Read more Less

probably the best 80's pop album

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jun 6, 2002

When I first heard the song 'Shout' all those years ago, I was immediately attracted to the great drumming on the track. Just starting to learn drums, I was instantly attracted to the song:)What makes this album so great is not only the one two punch... of 'Shout' and 'Everybody Wants to Rule The World', but in the songs that support those top singles.'Working Hour' should have been a single, as well as 'Broken'. 'Listen', although being a quasi experimental track in my opinion, still has a great ring to it. Its a great closer to the record (pre remastred version). There are also great vocal harmonies between principle songwriter Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith. This is especially evident on 'Everyone Wants to Rule the World.'This album captures more than any other 80's pop album, the style and feel of the time. I still can remember having a friend bring the tape along in a ghetto blaster on a high school hiking trip right when it came out. Every since that time, everytime I listen or hear a track off this album, I'm back there:)A classic, pure and simple. Read more Less

One of the greatest '80s pop albums.

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Sep 29, 2001

With the opening classic "Shout", Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith helped make pain a pretty catchy pop song. And "Everybody Wants To Rule The World" is just the best contemporary pop-rock song I've heard. All the other songs are well made and classic, i...ncluding the immortal "Broken", their third big American hit "Head Over Heels", another really excellent and driving synth-pop hit "Mother's Talk", the jazzy ballad "I Believe", the absolutely brilliant "The Working Hour",and the lush conclusion "Listen". The remastered is a sure buy, with good bonus tracks in "The Mauraders", "The Big Chair", "Empire Building", remixes of "Talk" and "Shout", and a remake of "Broken".Some people haver mixed feelings about what the best pop albums of the '80s are, but this makes my top 5 list without a doubt. Really strong classic album that deserves a listen. Read more Less

I hadn't heard this album in over twelve years and I picked it up from secondspin.com last week. I don't know why I ever got rid of my original copy. This album is wonderful. Listening to all the crap that is on the radio today, this album is a re...freshing look at real music. It's insightful, it's honest and dammit you can dance to it. This is a cd that will stay in my collection forever. If you don't have it, get it. You won't be disappointed. Read more Less

    Songs From the Big Chair

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Aug 7, 2001

By far one of the ultimate 80s albums. Wore it out twice as a cassette and now cherish the CD. At their best as a political conscious band (a la early U2) but capable of great rock songs and fantastic dance tunes. Everybody wants Tears for Fears t...o rule the world !! Read more Less
