Pro Reviews: Songs by Mabel Mercer, Vol. 3

  • All Music Guide

The third of Mabel Mercer's 10inch LPs for Atlantic, unofficially titled "Songs Written For Mabel Mercer" and featuring Cy Coleman as arranger, pianist, and leader of her accompanying band. The songs include the Cy Coleman/Joe McCarthy Jr.authored "Riviera" and "Early Morning Blues", and "Carry Me Back To Old Manhattan" and "You Will Wear Velvet" by George Cory and Douglass Cross. The whole platter is resplendant in what the New Yorker called "the lost art of the salon" as practiced by Mercer in the early 1950's, at places like the Showspot on East 52nd Street.
