    Here's one of the great Afro-Cuban guaracheras. The voice is still redolent of power and grace. The backing is one of those splendid everything-bands that Cuba has gone in for recently, with mule-kick trombones, rock-ish keyboards and guitar, strings, you-name-it. This is the sort of group that can even more or less carry off the boleros that reduce most salsa groups to banality.

Caridad Cuervo

With the death of Caridad Cuervo, in December 1998, Cuba's lost one of its best-loved vocalists. A prodigy of influential Cuban songstress Celia Cruz, Cuervo had attracted international attention as a featured vocalist at the Tropicana Club in Havana during the 1950s and early-60s.
