Pros: Smooth, easy, not hard to like, bonus disc good
Cons: not as much energy, the band isnt there
i love dave matthews and this solidifies it.
Pros: Everything!
Cons: The Song Some Devil
This CD is incredible! That's all I can really say about it. Here we see Dave doing something the usual DMB listener isn't used to. He does pop. But he does it in such a way that you can't help but like it. Right off the bat, the opening song "Dodo" hooks you right in. With the upbeat almost smooth jazz type of feel, you can just sit back and listen to the song without feeling overwhelmed by all that's going on. From there the rest of the CD is just great.
My only complaint is the title song of the CD. "Some Devil" while a well done song, just doesn't quite cut it with just Dave and his guitar and the echo effect.
I can't say enough about what a lyricist Dave is. Some of his lyrics seem to come out of right field but they make sense and fit the music incredibly well. I highly recommend the CD to any fan of good music. Even if you don't like DMB's usual stuff.
Pros: Lyrics, musical style
Cons: None
I am very happy with Dave Matthews' solo album, including the bonus disc with Tim Reynolds. I can't stop listening to either one! I highly recommend it.
Pros: Good sound, well produced, couple real strong songs
Cons: 1 or 2 on the album I could do without,
Good album, worth a purchase, a couple songs have weak lyrics, but there are some real strong songs on the album as well.
Pros: Relaxing, lyrics
Cons: Every song is slow
Great chill sound and lyrics, definitely a CD to relax to or have playing in the background. It doesn't demand your attention like the DMB we are use to. You won't find yourself play air drums in traffic, but that's alright. None of this songs would really work with the entire band, but Dave alone can pull it off with grace. Can't wait to here some acoustic versions of these songs. Go buy this one.
Pros: Oh
Cons: Flatlined
The only song that stands out on this album (even after listening to it several times) is track 10 "Oh". Its the only original song on the disc. Some of the instrumental was good on the other tunes, but his lyrics were too typical.
He might want to seclude himself in a drinking binge before he writes another...this one just didn't have the introspective attention and divergence from everything else thats being played. Step it up Dave.
Pros: great lyrics, good solid sound
Cons: not the depth or quality of DMB music
Dave Matthews is undeniably one of the best music writers, and particularly, lyricists of this generation. However, this album, while still containing Dave's mellow and gritty voice, lacks the musical depth and sound layering that is present on any DMB album. Two tracks, "Trouble", and "Stay or Leave" are very solid, and show his exceptional talent at lyrics, but other songs on the album are flat and really subpar for what his fans have come to expect. The music on the album is average, and sounds like typical studio sounds churned out by a studio band. All in all, a solid effort and a great listen, but it ranks near or at the bottom overall when judged against his previous DMB albums.
Pros: Expanding his sound
Cons: Not what you might expect if you listen to too much radio.
Again Dave delivers an album that is not heavy in the mainstream, the sign of a real artist. He proved on Everyday that he can slide into the mainstream, but his true gifts are songwriting, composing and playing beautiful music. He's innovative and he never disappoints his true fans. This album is great, but different from DMB.
Pros: It goes deep in the lyrics
Cons: Not enough songs with an upbeat tempo
I really think this CD is up there with Under the Table and Dreaming. It sounds soo good and it makes me want to relax. When I'm driving in the car I try not to get to the place in a hurry so I can listen to the CD longer. Dave Matthews really hit the nail on Some Devil. He Rocks!!
Pros: Musicians, Lyrics, Style
Cons: Please...
I doubt we will read too many bad reviews about this one.
Pros: Lyrics
Cons: No drive of the band
This c.d. is great, its relaxing and i love it..
Pros: Strong Lyrics
Cons: Packaging (I hate the cardboard cd cases)
Strong showing by Dave. I am a big DMB fan but this CD allows Dave to explore his musical thoughts down a completely different road than the band takes him. The strings are awesome, providing a very different feel from anything Dave's done before. In general most DMB fans will find Some Devil and enjoyable listening experience. The ones who don't are likely the same fans that don't like anything new by the group.
One final thing, I didn't know Timmy could play the drums, but he sure sounds good on this CD.
Pros: Anastasio's Guitar
Cons: DM's voice
The only promising thing of this terrible CD is Trey Anastasio's guitar work.
Pros: Good lyrics
Cons: Poor delivery
Its respectable that Dave has a creative outlet besides what he puts out with his band. A few of these songs sound experimental in nature, so the idea of him releasing a solo album makes sense. However, I think the cd on its own leaves much to be desired. There are only a few songs that I can think of that I would give multiple listens to. Maybe it will grow on me, who knows. This cd will sell well because of Dave's fan base with DMB, but without that reputation I don't think this cd would have sold very well at all.
As a side note, the bonus Dave/Tim disc is great. I love the acoustic versions of Grey Street and When The World Ends. I am really looking forward to the Dave/Tim studio album I've heard about and also hopefully a new live recording.
Pros: Different sound
Cons: Lyricly and musicly below par
There are a few decent songs on the album, such as gravedigger, and so lucky, but beyond these "singles" there not much to be had. The worst of it has to be the song from the Tim Reynold/Dave album about meeting a girl on the street and wishing you'd talked to her, which he transformed into just mumbling drivel in a faultseto voice. All in all, a good path to at least look down in his career, but not so pleasing to the fan.
Pros: The 5 track live bonus disc from last years tour!!
Cons: I would have liked to have read more of the meaning behind each song in the booklet.
Bought it at Sam Goody for $12.99!!
Dave shows who the solo king is and puts all those new wanna be artists back in their place, Jack Johnson...Johnny Mayer and that tool, Josh Kelly.
A very refreshing sound for traditional and non traditional Dave fans.
Each time I play the CD I enjoy each song more and more!
Minus two slow songs, the CD is uplifting and catchy. The beats are fantastic from start to finish, the lyrics intriguing, and Dave finally shows off his voice!!He truly can SING!
If you are a DMB fan you will NOT be dissappointed!
If you like solo artists, you will not be dissappointed BUT converted!
If you are a fan of music in general, you will not be dissappointed!
Give it a shot, especially if you can snag it up as cheap as I did!
Pros: hmmm, where do i start
Cons: cons??
Will he ever stop?? This guy continues to impress us. The style of this CD is a tad different than others WITH the band but nonetheless this is a great album..... The bonus disc from the wherehouse is top notch also.... its almost as good as live at luther college.
Pros: Has every bit of the feel of "Old DMB"
Cons: NONE
I love the CD. I bought it this morning, and I can't take it out of the CD player. Nothing Like having the old Dave back, with no apparent influence by the record industry like in Everyday. I'm skipping classes tomorrow and driving 350 miles to hopefully catch a glimpse of a few of these songs live. He's never sounded better! Not to mention the bonus disk with Tim!
Pros: Voice, Lyrics, Originality, Strays from DMB but conent with roots
Cons: not many
Here are some reasons why you should buy this cd...
1) It's only 9.99 at bestbuy and you can get it with a special Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds compilation from their tour earlier this year.
2) Despite the many stigmas against DMB and Dave in particular he is a very talented musician...his lyrics rival some of the best musical poetry out there save...bob dylan and friends.
3) Dave's voice sounds absolutely incredible in this album...his vocals stretch well beyond previous works, and concerts.
4) The music is unique. Tim Reynolds, Trey and Dave make an interesting mix of lead and rhythm guitar/sitar that is not common these days...
etc. etc...it's only 10 bucks..do yourself a favor even if you hate the fans the band draws. This is quality music...get passed the stigmatization of the group and you'll see that they have talent
Pros: Unique Melodies, Heavy riffs, Tight beats
Cons: No Boyd
If you like Dave with his Band (DMB), you will have no problem adjusting to this album. Dave still provides his great spirited lyrics, and some damn good vocals. The music still sounds very much Dave-like. One thing you will notice on this album is the use of electric guitars, but hey Trey, and Tim play alot on this, so expect it. There is still a raw acustic sound bleeding through to the appeasement of long loved fans. But I will say this, the Seattlemusic Group generates a beautiful harmony behind Dave's rustic voice. Actually to be honest, Dave really surprised me with the range of his voice on this album. The song "An' Another Thing" will blow your ears....wow. This song will grab your heart. Be sure to check out "Dodo" "So Damn Lucky" if nothing else. Buy the album anyway.....Dave has it priced low.....like 13 bucks with a 3 dollar rebate and access to some downloads and exclusive footage. You can't go wrong here.
im not too sure what dave was thinking on this album its horrible, should go back to the band and not go solo again
all i got to say is ive listened to the album and it was awesome
I am a huge fan but that doesnt mean I will like whatever he puts down. I am willing to buy the CD and see what he has to say solo... no harm done. He is still the master though!
he's nothing like Dave except for playing a guitar and if that's the case, then Dave is a plagerist also, dumbass.... also don't review something you haven't heard
I thought it wasn't out until 9/23. I pre-ordered it and it's scheduled to be delivered on Tuesday. "Gravedigger" is on NY radio and on VH-1. It is a very powerful song. I think he looks great with the beard...:-)
Dave hasn't disappointed in the past (maybe Everyday, the album, not the song, but I still dug that one too.) This one will probably be good too. Also, how can someone say if you don't like this you aren't a real Dave fan? He got his popularity off of his BAND. Also, John Mayer and Dave are at completely different levels...thats why people can say "Dave" and you know who they are talking about...
With the band or not Dave always comes up big.
He has rocked before, he is rocking now and he will continue to rock until he doesnt want to any more!
great great album, if u dont appreciate this, you arent a real "dave" fan
