    The Album So

    From Red Rain through the entire cd, i believe this album to be one of my all time favorites. In your eyes makes me weak in the knees. We played it at our wedding. If someone wanted a particular type of music to go into a time capsule from this er...a, "SO" wood definitely be it. Also, sledgehammer is great, all tracks are great. Read more Less

    The best 1980's album from a true artist

    With SO, Peter Gabriel has stood out on his own with commercial help. But the album is so amazing, with its production by Daniel Lanois and P.G. rock solid, and Peter's writing talents still image-laden and very good. The album opens with the powerfu...l and really amazing "Red Rain", then drives into the all-out funk 'n' dance-rhythms of "Sledgehammer", my favorite song and music video of the 1980s. The same could be said about the witty and equally funky "Big Time", and "In Your Eyes" is the best love song I have ever seen one man write, with Youssou N'Dour's scatting a real bonus. As for guest vocals, Kate Bush reunites with Peter for the hope-inspiring "Don't Give Up", and a song I really liked was "That Voice Again" (Gabriel's voice sounds really good there). "Mercy Street" could be boring to some, but me, I thought it was a lovely tribute to poet Anne Sexton with a smooth rhythm and sensual lyrics. "We Do What We're Told" is musically reminiscent of "Biko" and rather anthemic in Gabriel's words. And "This Is The Picure" with Laurie Anderson lets you down slowly from the mix that makes SO so superior to almost all of the other albums of its time. Read more Less

    Peter shows good evolution, good use of session musicians, and his writing is more accessible than ever. His songs have polish, elliquence, and are all radio friendly. The lyrics are topical, focused, and the music compliments his voice nicely. A p...rofessional WHAT'S GOING ON ??? Where is the "Morbund"/"Rythyn" Gabriel ? Not here. This is a record of crafted pop. Only "excellent Birds" is a hollow shadow of what Peter's music used to be. The music is pretty good, the sessionwork and lyrics are outstanding, and the general feel of the record is a triumph. I still am left in mystery with Peter's performance (well maybe a lack of performance). Read more Less

    I'm Not Wild About This As a Whole

    I really like Peter Gabriel, and I have great respect for his ability as an experimental musician and songwriter, but, I have to confess, I'm not all that wild about "So." Don't get me wrong, I enjoy listening to it a lot, but I don't think it's wort...h five stars and I definately don't think it's one of the best albums of all time. "Mercy Street," "Red Rain" and "In Your Eyes," though nice tunes, are extremely repetitive and lose their creative impact as the songs progress. "Big Time" is an excellent track, as is Gabriel's biggest hit [and one of the coolest videos of all time] "Sledgehammer." Overall, though, "So" doesn't pack the musical punch that can be expected from developed, mid-80s rock. Read more Less

    This was one of the best purchases I ever made. Highlights include Red Rain, Sledgehammer, Don't give up, In yout eyes, and Mercy Street. I thought he could omit that boring This is the picture from this album but anyway if anyone looking for a good... Peter Gabriel album put this one on top of your list! Read more Less
