    Fantastic album, unbelievable band

    By Balloonland  Mar 31, 2007

Pros: Great songs, blistering rythm guitar riffs, great band

    Cons: NONE

The Del Fuegos are a passion of mine so yes this is an unashamedly biased review. There's always the hope that they'll get together again. 'Live' they were fantastic. Album-wise? Longest Day is often considered their best but I would ...opt for Boston Ma. Apart from the now dated drum sound song for song it is their strongest offering especially I Still Want You, Shame, It's Alright ... in fact they're all great. Smoking In The Fields is very strong. Again great songs are what separates this band from many others. I disagree completely with the Pro reviewer when he says this sounds like a Dan Zanes solo album because at all times they sound like a band. Check out Dan's solo album Cool Down Time and you'll see what I mean - it is nothing like Smoking In The Fields! I preferred the line up from the 1st 3 albums with Warren and Woody on board. Favoutires: Down In Allen's Mills, Move With Me Sister, Friends Again, and the opening rythm guitar riff on No No Never is staggering. It is a really good record. A little mention for the much criticised Stand Up! album. It is not as good as the others but still has many great songs to make it a worthwhile purchase eg I Can't Take This Place, Name Names, Long Slide (For an out) and Town Called Love. Read more Less

Abandoning both longtime producer Mitchell Froom and label Slash, the Del Fuegos' move to RCA was ultimately their last stand. While it plays more like a Dan Zanes solo album, complete with horns, strings and a guest shot from two members of the J.Geils Band, they made a valiant but only partially successful attempt to rebound from the slickness of Stand Up. Things sure get off to an energetic start with the Geils' sounding “Move With Me Sister" assisted by Magic Dick's over-driven harp, then move into Bruce Springsteen territory with the anthemic, we-gotta-get-outta-this-place sentiments of “Down In Allen's Mills." But the strings and background vocals of “I'm Inside You" show a disturbing attempt to sweeten the band's raw RB/rock tendencies, similar to what happened to fellow-Bostonians Aerosmith. “Breakaway" takes a jangle rock page from Tom Petty's book with its sing-along chorus and “Stand By You" sounds too Dylan-ish for its own good. Individually the songs and performances are f...ine, if a little derivative, but overall the band seems to be going for that elusive hit. As in the past, the production reigns them in and dilutes their garage sound. Zanes is in fine ragged voice throughout, yet this album remains a blueprint for how these generally well-written tunes probably sounded live in a smoky club, the band's natural habitat. A little too constricted and calculated, Smoking In The Fields never achieved the radio play they (or their new label) desperately wanted/needed and they broke up soon afterward. - Hal Horowitz, All Music Guide Read more Less

Biography

The Del Fuegos

Kicking up a ruckus on the more garage-oriented side of the 1980s' roots rock boom, the Del Fuegos were a four-piece band from Boston who (at least for a time) won critical favor and a loyal cult following at home and on the road for their passionate, no-frills style. Formed in 1980, the Del Fuegos consisted of guitarist and singer Dan Zanes, his brother Warren Zanes on... Read more
