Johnson Gets His One Bad Album On New LP

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jun 27, 2008 | 0 out of 1 found this Sleep Through the Static review helpful

Pros: Some of the music is okay, at best, albeit far subdued in comparison to his previous efforts.

Cons: The entire album is depressing both lyrically and musically in comparison to Johnson's previous efforts.

Static is typically considered any noise that distorts communication, whether through television, telephones or any other communication medium. That being the case, Jack Johnson's new album is anything but static. It is however, something difficu...lt to handle, in comparison to his previous efforts. It may very well be an album that would lead many listeners to sleep through it entirely. The best comparison that one can make on this album is to Ben Harper's debut album, 'Welcome to the Cruel World.' The irony is that most fans of Jack Johnson are also fans of Ben Harper, and vice versa. That being the case, perhaps it is understandable that Johnson, who is lauded largely among college audiences, like Harper, sounds so much like Harper, even on this release. The overall tone of this album is far subdued, compared to his previous albums. This is the case, especially in comparison to his 2005 release, 'In Between Dreams.' That album contained some of Johnson's most upbeat, happy songs of his career. It is likely his best album so far in his career. To those who want to try and complain: yes, his 2000 release, 'Brushfire Fairytales' had a bit more mixture of happier and subdued pieces. But even on that record, there were more happier tunes to outweigh the more subdued ones. The album opens with a somewhat somber song in "All at Once" that pretty much sets the tone for the remainder of this album. Johnson sings in the chorus, "Sometimes it feels/like a heart is no place/to be singing from at all." The subdued nature of the album continues on in every track after this. Not every song is about emotional issues caused from relationship problems. The album's title track is a rather cynical look at the state of the world. The only seemingly positive tracks on this entire album come in the forms of "Hope" and "Angel." From that point, 'Sleep Through the Static' is pretty much downhill. It is sad that this album could have been so much better. But every artist is entitled to at least one less than stellar album in his or her career. That being the case, this is Jack Johnson's one bad album. Fans who have been disappointed by this release at least have his other albums to tide them over in the wait for what will hopefully be a better work in Johnson's next album. And hopefully, being that the album has met with more than mixed reviews, Johnson will make a concerted effort to make up for this album soon. Read more Less
