Out of the many XTC albums before and after this piece, I say this album stands as being the best( also along-side with Mummer). From psychedelic pop(Grass) to free-moving Fusion( Man Who Sailed around his Soul) to the pondering- of- existance atmospheres, this album moves with grace and harmony.
Ben.
The 15 year old.
it pretty good. The best they've ever done.
This is my first album foray into the world of XTC, and it is a significant step up from their greatest hits. The album blends together perfectly, once again surprising fans who'd never heard of XTC before (though they've been here for over 20 years). Songs like "Earn Enough for Us" and "Summer's Cauldron" have incredibly fun and catchy pop tunes, yet surprisingly erudite lyrics that make this much more than an ordinary Beatles based pop group. Their song "Dear God" is probably the strongest example of this band's more scholarly qualities, and is a great breath of fresh air to atheists and agnostics who to this day are vastly outnumbered by christian musicians. This is probably the only album of XTC that you won't have to search hard for, so go buy it!
I like just about every track, but nothing compares to Dear God I think that is the most amazing song I have ever heard in my life.
When one listens to Skylarking, you get a glimpse of near perfection. It washes away all that may be going wrong in life because, from highs to lows, it is covered here. I want to thank Andy, Colin, and the rest for making life a little bit better.
Highly produced. Fresh pop. Great harmonies and melodies reminesant of Beatles and Beach Boys. "The Man Who Sailed Around His Soul" typofies the lyrical content. Always a good listen in its entirety.
This album is at the same time homogenous and heterogenous - the songs fade into each other but they have their own "personality" at the same time. Superb arrangements combined with excellent lyrics. If the Beatles would be still existing and would have advanced in their style, they would probably sound like this. In my opinion, the best XTC album.
Skylarking is an amazing album that flows continuously from one song to another. The whole album seems to tell a story in ways, all about life and romance, and problems that arize in relationships. From the start of everything in "Grass", and "The Meeting Place", to questioning of life in the powerful "Dear God". If you have this album, follow how the songs all are tied into the start and falling in, and out of love, and if you don't have this album get it!
