    Excellence From A-Z

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Dec 1, 2002

We are fortunate to live in an era where the musical talent of the past and present is there for the listening. Many current groups are good, some are great, and then there are the very few. Dream Theater delves in to the musical world with a talen...t and ability that will leave the listener knowing that a masterwork is being set before them. Repeated listening will only reinforce the creativity that this group lays out each and every note. From hard hitting social issues, to the onset of insanity, to the observation of the soul within the husk we call a body, the interwoven notes keep the whole piece solid and totally on target. If you challenge your music to be worthy of entering your head then you can only wonder why more artists do not take this path to excellence. Read more Less

Until now "Scenes From A Memory" was my favorite, and for some reason I held out on this one thinking a double couldnt hold up..man was I wrong!! Excellent musicianship and all around great compositions. And normally I dont listen to a lot of "progre...ssive" music, but these guys have the enthusiasm and energy to back their brains :) Long live DT!! Read more Less

    Outstanding Musicianship and Song-Writin

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jun 17, 2002

First of all I'd like to stray from the norm of Yahoo internet reviews and make this one more intelligent. I'm going to avoid any comments such as DT "kicks ass" and try to write a helpful and quality review. It is clear that Dream Theater has done... it again. This album shows Dream Theater's song writing ability and interest in current events, but also showcases the awe-inspiring talent of each member. I would buy this album, if excluding any other positive factor, just to hear John Petrucci play guitar. To say that he is a "competent musician" would be the understatement of the century.Petrucci immediatly recognizes Dream Theater as a metal band on the first track, The Glass Prison, and later shows the DT is not just a metal band, with tracks such as Disappear and Misunderstood. A new-comer to Dream Theater might be put off by the length of songs contained on Six Degrees, but I think once that hurdle has been jumped, anyone can become a fan of Dream Theater, a truly multi-faceted band. 6 Dergrees...

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Mar 22, 2002

What can you say, just when you think you've heard the best from Dream Theater(Scenes From New York), they out-do themselves with 6-degrees... What else would you expect when you unite the best drummer, guitarist, bass, piano, and singer in the worl...d. If you don't like Dream Theater, then you must hate great music. Read more Less

    Their best

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Mar 4, 2002

I didn't think DT could top Metropolis Part 2. But they did it with Six Degrees. A risky proposition(2 cd's), especially in this day and age of the music industry where the bottom line is all that matters(even if the music is horrible). Dream Theater... show that musical talent and virtuoso ability can have a loyal following large enough to stay on a major. The first cd opens well with "The Glass Prison." Mike Portnoy is taking double bass drumming to new heights. I didn't believe he could top Metropolis. The band is so versatile from the almost death metally opening cut to the poppier and melodic "Blind Faith." All the songs on the first cd showcase DT's ability at mastering odd times and blending superior musicianship in the process. The second cd and title of the album is the 42 minute epic. This is my favourite of all DT's long epic songs, even better than Metropolis. The band explores vast musical avenues and even hits at some influences(the Peter Gabrialesque "Solitary Shell" to the Rush style "crash/grand finale."Overall, DT show once again that they are the leaders in the prog rock world. They carry the torch from such bands as Genesis, Yes, Pink Floyd, and early Rush very well. A fine performance and one that musicians(I being a drummer in my own prog rock band) should enjoy greatly! Six Degrees of Virtuoso Music

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Feb 8, 2002

Coming fron an observational standpoint, this album is very much like Liquid Tension Experiment, only with vocals from time to time. However, it is still a very worthwile album to listen to. In an age of calls to "break stuff", and puppy love boy b...ands, it is refreshing to hear yet another high caliber release from the masters of modern prog. Mike Portnoy's chops are as tight as ever; sounding almost like Neal Peart at times. John Petrucci shows time and again why he is so highly respected. He can play the most pummeling riffs, and even the softest most beautiful music as in tracks like "misunderstood". Even Eddie Van Halen himself was never at this man's caliber. John Myung plays rythms that should not be humanly possible throughout. I get an image of a man and octopus combined when I listen to him. And Jordan Rudess's "flying fingers" leave the listener's jaw on the floor. There are times when he sounds like a young Beethoven or Mozart. James Labrie's vocals on the opening "Glas Prison" oddly made me think of Dave Mustane in ihs early days. Many peple say prog is not worth listening to, but perhaps, it is one of the few things worth listening to this day in age. These men are not mere musicians. They are virtuosos. Read more Less
