Synopsis: Sink the Bismarck! (1960)
Synopis: It's spring 1941, and Great Britain is the only country in Europe yet to be defeated by the Nazi army, but all of that could change soon. The Nazis have launched their juggernaut battleship, the Bismarck, to close off British supply lines and ultimately invade England. A counterstrike is ordered, and with an arsenal of ships at their command, Royal Intelligence officers Jonathan Shepard (Kenneth More) and Anne Davis (Dana Wynter) fight desperately to destroy the Bismarck. Director Lewis Gilbert delivers a heartfelt docudrama about the courageous men and women of the British navy. Featuring actual war footage and a roller-coaster plot, the film is an unforgettable document of world history.Features: Sink the Bismarck! (1960)

Cons: A movie not a documentary
Sink the Bismarck is a very engaging movie. The characters, though understated, are powerful, and the action scenes convincing and moving. It is a well-made movie.
But it is a movie, not a documentary. Though based on facts, the movie takes frequent dramatic liberties. The two main characters are entirely fictional. The dialogue is conjecture as well. And as for the point of view, it is unapologetically pro-Allies. The viewer is left with no doubt whatsoever that the British were the good guys and the Germans the bad guys in this encounter.
Yet as patriotic war movies go, this one is a cut above average. ...

Considering the limited technology available at the time, the battle sequences are surprisingly realistic. The destruction of the HMS Hood is as devastating to the viewer as it is shown from the seaman aboard the other ships. The black-and-white is used to its fullest and most bleak, especially in the scene where the seaman dabs up blood off of his map, then realizing that it is coming from the bridge.
Kenneth More does a good job playing the hard-butt who really has a soft heart for his son; Dana Wynter does well playing the secretary who takes an instant dislike to him but finds out later what a sensitive person (More) really is.
The movie is thrilling and the ending is satisfying in the utmost. (I just wish that it was available on DVD, though.) ...
