| EXPERT RATING: From AMG Reviews The latest installment from the Standards series by the U.K,'s EMI division is this excellent Nina Simone volume. First, considering the many sources from which these 21 recordings were culled from the 1950s-1990s, they are remarkably consistent. Secondly, the material is unassailable. From her earliest RB-oriented jazz ("Do Nothing 'Til You Hear from Me," "Stompin at the Savoy," "It Don't Mean a Thing," "I Got It Bad"), the classic folk repertoire ("House of the Risin' Sun," "Cotton-Eyed Joe"), to the grand pop standards she radically interpreted -- whether they be from musicals ("I Loves You Porgy") to vernacular torch songs ("Summertime," "It Might as Well Be Spring," "Wild Is the Wind," "Willow Weep for Me") -- are all given here in their original readings. This presentation, in fact, apart from her other excellent anthologies, offers a portrait of the vocalist as one of the premier interpreters of the American standard canon, as great as Sarah Vaughan and Dinah Washington, if not Ella Fitzgerald herself. - Thom Jurek, All Music Guide |
