Skinny Puppy morphed their sound into many different forms, expanding their sound on almost a yearly basis. Placing all of the tracks in chronilogical order would have made sense, especially since it would give the compilation a flow of some sort and listeners could hear the band progress. Since much of Skinny Puppy's best work was confined to singles and EPs that are now very, very obscure, using the actually mixes from singles instead of the cuts from the albums would have made sense, especially since this is supposedly a "Singles Collection." For example, the album cut of "Spasmolytic" could have been replaced with the very rare remix from the single of the same name. The same can be said for the inclusion of the album versions of "Censor" (the "Extended" mix is still very rare) and "Tormentor" (the "Extended Re-Edit" mix is still rare). However, "Singles Collection" does include the "Single" mix of "Inquisition" the "Edit" or "(Ed)" mix of "Worlock" and the long out-of-print "Short Edit" of "Dig It". The inclusion of the latter three tracks makes it worth seeking out for collectors of this band's work. "Singles Collection" covers more ground than any other compilation of Skinny Puppy's music and thus is an excellent introduction to this classic band. It is highly recommended to anyone new to Skinny Puppy to start with "Singles Collection" by all means. ...

| EXPERT RATING: From AMG Reviews It's not a compilation of across-the-board greatest songs, but the Skinny Puppy singles collection does the old 12" Anthology one better by including tracks from the group's three Nettwerk albums of the 1990s (Rabies, Too Dark Park, and Last Rights). For fans, it's long been a dream to have the full fruits of the industrial kingpins' long career all on one disc -- "Dig It," one of Skinny Puppy's first and best singles, appears right beside "Worlock," from 1989's Rabies. Also aboard are a baker's dozen of well-selected career highlights, including "Assimilate," "Tormentor," "Deep Down Trauma Hounds," "Stairs and Flowers," "Testure," "Tin Omen," "Inquisition," and "Killing Game." Though a chronologically ordered compilation would have been a better idea, The Singles Collect sounds excellent all the way through and proves that Skinny Puppy was, hands down, the best and most adventurous band of the industrial era. - John Bush, All Music Guide |
