Pro Reviews: Singing All Day & Dinner On The Ground

EXPERT RATING:

From AMG Reviews

Jimmy Martin may have helped keep bluegrass music on the country charts in the '60s with his secular, mainstream approach to musicmaking, but he had a spiritual side, too. He recorded two bluegrassgospel albums for Decca Records, This World Is Not My Home and Singing All Day and Dinner on the Ground, both of which Music Mill reissued in 2005. The latter album was originally released on LP in 1970 with a dozen recordings of mixed chronology. Most of the cuts come from a 1970 session with a band that includes Doyle Lawson and Alan Munde backing Martin on a mixture of original and classic gospel songs. The remaining five recordings date from 19601962, two of which feature a young J.D. Crowe on banjo. The album begins with the celebratory title track, ends with the tragic "Little Angels in Heaven," and runs the gamut in between. Martin's original "God Is Always the Same" echoes the melody of "Tramp on the Street," and "Stormy Waters" is simply a gospel classic. Despite the range in recording dates, the tracks blend together well, although the cuts from 1970 have a softer edge. Singing All Day and Dinner on the Ground isn't a masterpiece on par with This World Is Not My Home, but it is a typically excellent effort from the King of Bluegrass.
