I liked it a lot
, March 7, 2001but one of the problems I have is that the music was presented so effectively onscreen that it seems a little incomplete all by itself without any visuals (some soundtracks are actually better WITHOUT their films). Especially Gene Kelly's solo numbers...his voice sounds fine when I can watch him dancing and smiling while listening, but by itself it has always fallen a bit flat with me--with a couple of exceptions, like this movie's title song. And although the liner notes are entertaining, they were previously published in a book; I would have rather read something new. Nevertheless, it's overall a fine soundtrack to a great film. ... -

Brown(music). Donald O'Connor argues that the show must go on ("Make 'Em Laugh"), Debbie Reynolds innocently asks "Would You?", and the king of musical comedy/dance, Gene Kelly, praises his luck while "Singin' in the Rain."

| EXPERT RATING: From AMG Reviews Of the promised soundtrack releases from Rhino, this one is among the most anticipated. Fortunately for the discerning soundtrack collector, it's well worth the wait -- fans of musicals in general should not miss this one. Producers Marilee Bradford and Bradley Flanagan have included all the musical material from the film, it seems, added several outtakes (such as the unused version of "You Are My Lucky Star") and topped that off with supplemental material that includes an alternate version of the main title (in instrumental form; the vocal angles were lost). A number of the tracks are newly mixed to stereo from the original studio angles. A beautiful remastering job and copious liner notes (including an article from writers Betty Comden and Adolph Green) complete the package. - Steven McDonald, All Music Guide |
