Here are my two cents, if you want to critize AFI, you must undertstand that they are the modern day "Misfits." Teenagers from all over the world are getting permanent tattoos of AFI like they did with them, and many strongly relate to the ...lyrics and appreciate the music more than life itself. Many punk bands have come and gone in the past but A fire inside is much more than a trend. To some, They are more than just a band, some people believe in a bunch of man made crosses, but some people devote their whole life around their message and the serenity that they redeem from it. The only problem is where can they go from here. I recommend that you don't let anyone discourage you about any band you like but: to follow your own heart and let your own individuality speak for itself. AFI isn't made for everyone, so I don't believe that it's right that MTV still chooses your music in the long run but maybe that'll all change one day, but anyways check out some of the old AFI stuff, it's really good...Depeche Mode, The Cure, The Adicts, John Coltrane and Stan Getz are other really good artists...In my opinion. I won't lie - I never listened to AFI before this album came out. I'm not an "old-school" or "hardcore" AFI fan. But this album is full of good songs. It sounds good. My opinion of music has always been to be supportive of bands when new people like ...their stuff - what's to say that Sing The Sorrow won't get another 100 people to buy Black Sails and love it? It worked for me. Read more Less

Sing the Sorrow, its Dreamworks debut, isn't the wholesale departure from AFI's roots that some longtime fans griped about. It is merely the next step on a path that began with 1999's Black Sails in Sunset, the first album to feature guitarist Jade Puget. Assuming the role of principal songwriter, Puget wrapped vocalist Davey Havok's gothic tendencies in songs that put a finer point on the aggressive hardcore of AFI's earlier material, and massaged hooks from a morass of crashing rhythm, punk rock riffs, and Havok's opaque lyrics. The backing of Dreamworks meant that AFI could now hire major-league production to tweak what Puget had started. And they did. Work on AFI's major-label bow began in August of 2002 at LA's Cello Studios, with Butch Vig (Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins) and Jerry Finn (Green Day, Rancid) at the helm. Emerging in early 2003 with Sing the Sorrow, it's clear the molting process AFI began with Black Sails in Sunset is complete. Vig and Finn kept the band's nucleus of p...ummeling California hard core, but stretched the songs lengthwise to incorporate greater lyrical introspection for Havok and even more attention to melody than on previous efforts. Oscillating between churning verses and intersecting solos and riffs, "The Great Disappointment" is like junior varsity Fugazi, while the heroic emo chord changes of "This Celluloid Dream" transform Havok's preening wail into a sensitive croon, and single "Girls Not Grey" is a car-radio sing along of pure genius. Hardcore punk revivalists A.F.I.
