The Sinceros had been playing together since the mid-'70s when their rhythm section, bassist Ron Francois and drummer Bobby Irwin, was offered the opportunity to back Lene Lovich on her debut album and support her on tour. The exposure helped the rest of the group (guitarist/vocalist Mark Moesgaard Kjelden and former Vibrator Don Snow on keyboards) secure a record deal, and The Sinceros' debut album, The Sound of Sunbathing, was released in 1979.
