Pro Reviews: Simply Devotion: Cassy In The Mix

  • All Music Guide

Cassy Britton's aptitude for unifying disparate strands of house and techno might seem less novel than it did in 2006, when Ostgut Ton released the DJ/producer's Panorama Bar 01. Indeed, her selections for Simply Devotion, almost exclusively from the 2008/2009 class, could not have been made with the intent of warping anyone's perception of her tastes. As on the Panorama Bar set, there are a couple shouts to the Delsin crew, via the Future Beat Alliance mix of Danny Howells' "September" and Quince's bristling dub mix of Taho's "Energy Fields," along with otherwise underrecognized truffles from the U.S. deep house underground, namely Kai Alcé and Azulu Phantom's duly funky, notquitetribal "Power Thru, Pt. 3." More notably, there is a load of European producers who bear influences that are almost wholly American: Trus'me and Linkwood put spins on early Moodymann's cyclonic discohouse ("Good God" and the Minnie Ripertonsampling "I'm a Woman," respectively), and then there's Kassem Mosse, ...with his own version of tracky/techy Theo Parrish (the first track off the eighth Workshop release). Unlike Panorama Bar 01, this set sounds like it was mixed digitally, given the drawnout stretches of beatmatching, and it's a little less stern in disposition. That the set closes with the bright keyboard prickles of Pierre LX's "Gabita" and the house mix of Ralph Falcon's "Whateva," bearing nasally taunts, drives that point home. - Andy Kellman, All Music Guide Read more Less

Biography

Cassy

Not to be confused with the teen RB performer with the same name, Cassy (aka Catharine Britton) made her first recordings as a vocalist on Autorepeat's "Music Takes Me Higher" ep in the late nineties. However, it was her project with producer/DJ Dave The Hustler that helped to propel her into the minimal techno spotlight. After collaborating on tracks with Perlon's Luci... Read more
