Simple Kid (real name: Ciaran McFeely) was born in Cork, Ireland, where he grew up with an appreciation for British rock giants like Zeppelin and the Who. He aimed to make it himself in the music business, and to that end joined a sort of glammy metal outfit at the young age of 18. The band faltered, however, and suddenly the Simple Kid was broke and homeless in the American West. Tumbling back home through straits and brambles, he ended up with a bunch of recordings tracing routes between Blur, Beck, and the hippie electronica of Super Furry Animals. The "I Am Rock" and "Truck On" singles appeared through the British indie Fierce Panda in 2003, and Simple Kid started appearing as an opener with types like Travis, the Thrills, Ocean Colour Scene, and even Suede. The fulllength 1 saw U.K. release in spring 2004; it eventually made its way to America via Vector Recordings, the Warnerdistributed imprint that'd sprung Damien Rice on Yanks.
