Pro Reviews: Silver 'n Brass

  • All Music Guide

The first of five LPs that feature Horace Silver's Quintet being augmented by other instrumentalists, this set finds trumpeter Tom Harrell, tenor-saxophonist Bob Berg, either Ron Carter or Bob Cranshaw on bass and either Al Foster or Bernard Purdie on drums joined by five brass players and two reed specialists. Although there are tributes to Tadd Dameron ("Dameron's Dance") and Duke Ellington ("The Sophisticated Hippie"), the music is recognizably Silver -- funky hard bop.
