Pros: None
Cons: Power switch
Had this modem for a year and then the power switch just stopped working. Called AT&T and they said that I'll have to buy a new one because the warranty is up at 1 year. Why would I buy another if the first one is faulty? Just AT&T taking advantage of their customers. I'm cancelling my service before I buy another product that they know is faulty. Obviously they know that it will only last up to 1 year, so why not treat your customers the way they should be treated and replace it because it was built with an inferior switch. Unbelievable!!!
DO NOT BUY THIS MODEM!!!!
Pros: compact design
Cons: can't handle medium to heavy loads
want to watch youtube video clips? The modem stops working after one or two clips.
want to watch TV episodes clips? The modem won't make it through a single one.
want to play online games like EQ2 or WoW? Forget it, the modem can't handle the load (which is not a lot).
Pros: None
Cons: Durability
I purchased the Speedstream with my DSL service in Nov of 2006. The on/off switch started to cause issues about 5 months later. I though it was just a small issue. last night it completly died and doesn't turn on anymore. Since the product is out of warranty its not covered.
Pros: small
Cons: ugly design, connection does not last long.
IF you are a big time gamer, I reccomend not GETTING this modem. As from my experience, the modem starts wearing off about 2-3 months later and starts giving you crappy connection.. Did i also mention that it is really is allergic to EVERYTHING including a monitor? btw i havent got my damn rebate..
The most ridiculous modem alive.. it likes to jack off
Pros: small and compact
Cons: a defect after power down
i have been a DSL customer from SBC ever since 2001. used the old speedstream product for years until it died on me a month ago. AT&T charged me $60 for the new siemens speedstream 4100 b.
it worked for less than two weeks and it died on me after the power outtage in the area. I did have the power to a surge protector. Technician came out to switch out the new modem and gave me a brand new siemens speedstream 4100 b! he even insisted to me that should i have problem with this again that I can call him and he can come over to help.
he told me that there is a known problem about this modem and that he has been replacing modems for customers all day!
well, here it is again, two weeks later now, and my husband had to move the router from one side of the room to the otherside. In doing so, he had to unplug the wires. this time the modem started up ok but the DSL, Internet, Activity light didnt catch on. I spent over 40 minutes on the phone with technical support... this is crappy! all they can do is schedule for a technician to come out here to replace my modem and it's mostlikely going to be another siemens speedstream 4100 b!
if you happen to own this modem, dont ever turn off the power because that will kill the modem!
Pros: Hi quality fast connection
Cons: none
I have used this modem at two locations with no problems at all. It has been very reliable and maintained my DSL connection well.
I do not ever turn off the modem. The initial instructions say to keep it on for 10 days. I have very rarely had a reason to turn the modem off.
With the rebate from sbc/at&t it is a great deal.
Pros: Great transfer speed
Cons: Pitiful power switch
Listen to the other reviews. I'm on my second 4100 (this one a 4100"B"), and the power switch has begun to fail exactly like the first modem.
Bottom line: It's a decent modem, and transfer rates are excellent (it knows how to prioritize simultaneous up/downloads VERY well), but definitely USE A POWER STRIP OR INLINE POWER SWITCH instead of the modem's power button. This button is good for 100 or so uses, then begins to fall apart.
Whether this is just bad design, or bean counters got the best of Siemens production team, or psychological warfare to get people to leave their modems on all the time, I don't know. But it must be costing them (and AT&T) a fortune in warranty service.
Pros: Free if I get my $50.00 rebate from AT&T
Cons: Extremely poor quality switch
I purchased the modem from AT&T in December 2006 with a $50.00 rebate. I still have not received the rebate since December 2006. The red warning label to leave the modem on for 10 days is very difficult to remove. The serial number is not marked clearly (to receive the rebate).
The first modem lasted about four months the on and off switch quit. Three other friends had the same problem with the switch. Now I just unlug it when not in use. Very cheap quality product it is
poor advertisement for AT&T.
Pros: It's color matches the unit
Cons: Doesn't seem to last
This is the third Speedstream modem I have had and every one of them had a problem with the on/off switch crapping out within six months. Had to use a toothpick one time just to get the unit to stay on. What a pain. Hope others have had better luck.
