Lyricist Sidney Clare was born in New York City on August 15, 1892, and got his start performing and writing on the vaudeville circuit, though primarily as a dancer and comic. He also tried his hand at songwriting, however, and came up with an early Tin Pan Alley standard in 1921's "Ma, He's Makin' Eyes at Me," a collaboration with composer Con Conrad that first became a hit for Eddie Cantor.
