From humble beginnings as a prehistoric tribe of hunters and gatherers, to a farflung future of extraterrestrial colonization, players lead their people to dominate Earth and beyond in this eraspanning game of empirebuilding. A true living legend of computer game design, Sid Meier invites strategists to conquer the world all over again, in this fourth edition in the influential Civilization series.

Many of the most significant additions to this version of Civilization involve customization. The tech tree remains the roadmap to scientific and industrial advancement, but there is now more than one path to milestone discoveries. The religion model offers more customization as well, and players can now better use the power of faith to spread their culture, or they can choose to have no state religion at all, boosting scientific endeavors.

Combat has been enhanced in Civ IV, to give more individuality to veteran units and to balance away occasional historical mismatches sometimes noticed in earlier editions of Civ. More than one leader character is available for many of the traditional opponent nations, and the game will play differently depending on who is in charge of rival empires. In all, Civilization IV is designed to offer players a game world of unprecedented sophistication and realism, whether they aim to win it through warfare or culture. ~ T.J. Deci, All Game Guide

Civ IV -- buggy, slow and the same old story

Pros: Addicting play (if you haven't played it before)

Cons: Crash bugs, very slow performance near endgame

Just another "me too" review. This is one of the few games that I disliked enough to take back. 1. I love the original Civ. But here we are at Civ IV and *nothing substantial has been improved*. There’s no city micromanagement sub-game, n...o in-depth battle animations, no searchable Civilapaedia, and basically no value over the Civ III. Yes, the 3D graphics look nice, but they are sub-par for 2005. 2. The game is too slow. It looks like a bug, but the working set VM for this game often rose above 1GB. 3. When I bought it there were *not patches*. And as far as I could tell, there’s no automated way to patch (i.e. you had to search around the web site for it). We've evolved from that, especially since it seems the patch is mandatory. 4. There was no mention on the 2K games web site as to these problems. But they do give the "boilerplate" excuse: update your graphic driver. I did, and it was no better. Given how frequent the problems are, it is un Read more Less

    Pros: Replay Value, Extremely Fun

Cons: A very system intensive game

Civilization games have a reputation for having addictive gameplay, for being epic in scale, and for having enormous replay value. This incarnation is no different, with the variety of cultures to choose from (18) and subcultures for several civiliza...tions (for example America can be led by George Washington or FDR) and a new tech tree and governmental "Civics" system, this version of Civilization goes beyond the already stellar benchmarks set by previous Civ games. With the new civics system you can play as a country of pacifists, an environmentally friendly Police State, with freedom of speech, and mercentalism as the economic system--all at once; and then, the next time you play, you can have a completely different form of government. However, with all the positives, this game does have one down side, the game can quickly put strain on older computers, so make sure your computer meets or exceeds recommended system requirements. All in all, I highly recommend this game for any computer gamer. People who like history, or other games like Rise of Nations and Empire Earth will probably also like this game. Read more Less
