Puff Daddy had intended Shyne to replace the deceased Notorious B.I.G., as the two sounded remarkably similar, but the young sound-alike barely had a chance before he was imprisoned during Puffy's headline-grabbing scuffle with the law in early 2001. Shyne had originally been indicted on attempted murder charges on January 5, 2000, yet managed during the course of the year to complete his self-titled debut album, which Bad Boy released in September with much hoopla. The album spawned a few radio singles ("Bad Boyz" and "That's Gangsta") but didn't swoon too many fans.
