Pro Reviews: Showboy Special: The Early King Sides
| EXPERT RATING: From AMG Reviews This gathers the first 18 sides cut by Moon and his Showboys at their first session for King Records in 1946, plus another five from his first sessions of 1947. The Showboys were a wild Western-swing band that played equal parts blues and jazz, mixed in with polka, weepers, and other Texas dancehall fare. They rocked hard on sides like "Shoot the Moon," "Don't Ever Take My Picture Down," "Showboy Special," and "Let Me Rock You Baby," while getting effectively sentimental on tunes like "I Didn't Think You'd Ever Really Go," "When a Soldier Knocks and Finds Nobody Home," and "There's a Chill on the Hill Tonight." Classic Texas honky tonk music from the late '40s, and an essential part of Moon's catalog. - Cub Koda, All Music Guide |
