  • Overall:

    Best Soul album ever!

    By Rafael  Sep 10, 2001

This may be a HIPHOP SOUL album but still as it belongs to the soul genre,I will boldly contend that this is simply the best Soul album ever. And let me add with full confidence that JODECI is the BEST SOUL GROUP EVER.It's too bad they only made 3 alb...ums in 10 years so far but let us keep our fingers crossed that they would reunite to make the high quality level Soul they put out. They took the crown away from the STYLISTICS for sure.If you are a LIBERAL and love SOUL,you might not want to miss out on the musical heaven Jodeci brings. All their albums are outstanding with improvements on every album they release, this one being the last one..... • Overall:

    One of their bests

    By D  Aug 28, 2001

This was one of their best albums but I actually like "Diary of a Mad Band" the most. They are supposed to be coming out with a new album in November I heard. I'll get it when it comes out.

Although their songs imply otherwise, the Hailey brothers had extensive careers in gospel before turning to secular music. The wails, shouts, and yells that accompany most of their hits reaffirm that tradition, and it's clearly audible often on their latest Uptown entry. Again they employ a running storyline/theme through the disc, this time incorporating audio vignettes about life on and off stage during a concert that are interspersed through the disc and help pad things out through what is a poorly edited and sequenced CD. Unlike many other urban and RB groups, Jodeci doesn't really produce its material with singles in mind; there's not really one song here that works as a separate entity, even though several stations are playing edited cuts. Ironically, their refusal to emphasize radio hits, which in most cases would be deemed a sage creative ploy, frequently works against Jodeci. They let ballads drone on, up-tempo tunes end awkwardly, and extend sections until they lose their imp...act. However Jodeci's earnestness and enthusiasm often helps them overcome cliched lyrics and melodramatic vocals, and there are enough good moments sprinkled throughout this disc to make it worthwhile for most urban contemporary listeners. - Ron Wynn, All Music Guide Read more Less

Biography

Jodeci

If Boyz II Men are portrayed as a clean-cut, wholesome RB vocal group, then Jodeci's wild, sexual, bad-boy image represents the other side of the coin. Made up of two sets of brothers, the group's name is a consolidation of three members' aliases: "JoJo" Hailey, Donald "DeVante Swing" DeGrate, and Cedric "K-Ci" Hailey; the group also includes Dalvin DeGrate.
