Shottas
, November 16, 2002Reviewer: canihitu - See all canihitu's reviewsShottas is very good flick. A plot? Di-deh. Good acting? Di-deh. The movie moved. It was truly a pleasha fi watch a film wit some autentic Jamaican accent and representation, not the Leon and Taye Diggs-type to which we've grown accustomed. Di actors dem (Kymani Marley, Spragga and Louie Rankin) do a wundaful job. Mi woulda never expect dat type ah performance from Marley and Spragga. But if yuh see Louie Rankin in "Belly," den yuh kno' 'ow im c'yan g'won wit di rough "Lenox" talk. Despite the usual "Jamaican bad b'woy theme," I recommend this movie highly. Hopefully di producers dem c'yan get ah distributor so all Miami, New York and every major city c'yan see ow fi do Jamaican-themed movies inna di future--Shottas has raised the bar. ...

Pros: authentic jamaican setting, good use of jamaican youths, excellent music score
Cons: plot shortcomings, some characters not fully developed
I loved this movie. I have been trying to see the bootleg version of this movie when it first came out back in 2002 and I was visiting a friend in NYC. It was a highly recommended underground drug cult movie with new but recognizable talent, Kymani Marley, Spragga Benz and Wyclef Jean. Over the years, I forgot about this movie dismissing that it was a shame that it would never be released and distributed by a large studio. Four and a half years later, when much of the cast has changed dramatically in appearance, Spragga now has dreadlocks (still hot and sexy, Kymani is much older, the director and Wyclef has since both cut their locks), the movie has been release and I have finally seen it. and have to say, I LOVED It. While the movie has some shortcomings due to the small budget and inexperience acting of some of the characters, however, I found the main characters-Marley and Benz to be sympathetic and you find yourself rooting for them to survive. Some of the other shortcomings are obvious such as the lack of security these so called gangsters had, the small local restaurants they frequented in broad daylight and the easy way they moved around seemed almost too good to be true. While a great deal of the violence was raw and gritty, I still found it tame in comparison to some other past gangster type movies-Belly, Scarface etc. Wyclef's role did seem to be a last minute gig more as a walk on, improvise and appear to be more of the director returning a favor by having him in the movie as his role was very small and insignificant, however his acting skills were not that bad. The overbreasted women were too over bearing in my opinion, and could have been toned down some as it gave it a B porn feel to it, but that seemed to be a turned on for the director and his crew. I would of like to see a more stronger Kymani, as he was just a little too calm and one dimesional for my liking but he was definitely an eye candy, and as for Spragga Benz and his serial killer friend Mad Max, they both carried the movie. Overall the authenticity of the movie was felt, I understood the vision and the score was phenomenon. I am buying not one but two copies and I highly recommed it, especially the commentary by its writer director-Cess Silvera. ...
