Pro Reviews: She's the Boss
| EXPERT RATING: From AMG Reviews She's the Boss is a twoCD bootleg of live material, recorded at San Francisco's California Hall on February 16, 1967, and bears some historical interest as some of the earliest live recordings of Big Brother the Holding Company to surface. Given the availability of better live Big Brother on official releases that were recorded before and after this concert, however, it's not of much interest except to insatiable fans. That's particularly the case since most of these songs are available, in both better and worse sound and performance, on numerous other legit and underthecounter records containing live Big Brother with Janis Joplin. All the same, if you are someone who wants to get as much as you can from Big Brother and/or Joplin, it's okay. The sound is above average for an early'67 live rock bootleg, though it's kind of muffled and unbalanced, and it sounds like the recording equipment was occasionally overloaded, resulting in infrequent passages with heavy distortion. The performance is decent, drawing heavily from the songs included on their first studio album, also adding "Combination of the Two," "Ball and Chain," "I Know You Rider," "Roadblock," "Farewell Song" (mistakenly titled "Last Tune" on the cover), and "Coming Home" the last three of which didn't find a place on either of the Big Brother albums with Joplin, but have surfaced in other live and/or studio versions elsewhere. If there's any notable difference between the band here and as they're heard on their two proper albums, it's that the songs are stretched out more something especially noticeable on the lengthy rendition of "Light Is Faster Than Sound." Be aware that it's not as long a doubleCD set as you'd imagine; each disc is only about 40 minutes, the total length probably just exceeding the capacity of a single disc. - Richie Unterberger, All Music Guide |
