the only good movie he's done
Pros: plot
Cons: a morality lesson all of us should already know and practice
Out of all the things Jack Black has done, this is the Only descent one he's been in. He tries to be a comedian, but that role does not work out for everyone, despite what the person themself may think of their routines. My suggestion: if you're going to buy a movie with jack black, this is the one to get, don't bother wasting your money on any of his other releases including musically. Believe me, this is the only work he's done that is worth anything.

ICCH! ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. I HAVE HAD IT UP TO HERE WITH THE APPALLING FILMS THEY HAVE NOW. ESPECIALLY THE TEEN SEX FLICKS. THIS MOTION PICTURE FILM ENTITLED "SHALLOW HAL" IS NOT A GOOD PRODUCTION.

This was an excellent movie, despite what people say. I've never seen a comedy with that kind of realistic message attached to it. In many ways a lot of the shallow/good hearted people reminded me of people I know or have known in my life.

It was nothing like I thought it would be. Jack Black and Jason Alexander were awesome. This is a movie that our society really needs to digest and learn from.

Shallow Hal was a horrible comedy, it was not funny at all. The deleted scenes, like in Me, Myself, and Irene, were funnier than the movie. The movie does have it's moments, just not funny ones. If you are wanting to laugh, don't watch this movie. If there is nothing else at the video store and you need to pass two hours, this will work. Just remember don't expect to laugh.

The Farrelly Brothers have really...grown up.
This movie is not only funny, but it's intelligent, warm hearted, kind, and fun.
I will admit that some of the "fat" jokes are incredibly cruel, but in the Farrelly wit...the underdog certainly gets the upper hand. >=D
The special effects are amazing. (Ever imagined Gwyneth Paltrow at around 300 pounds? No? Me either, but they certainly make it believable.)
Speaking of Miss Paltrow...she herself carries the entire film without meaning to. Her portrayal of a 300 pound woman, is amazing. For the majority of her screentime, you see her as she normally is, but she STILL conveys the pain, the joys, the strength, and overall..the love of a person with a heart of gold.
The entire gist of the movie IS: It doesn't matter what you look like, who you are, what you are, your status in life, or your afflictions...(wait until you see Walt, and little Cadence)...love comes in all forms, everyone deserves it, and the ones you might think are the most unattractive...are the most beautiful.
Definitely a great comedy, one of the best date movies, and a really sweet, and charming movie with a lot of heart. Highly recommended to everyone.

Although the message of the movie was good (beauty of a person is a reflection of much more than just physical attributes), "Shallow Hal" manages to reinforce society's warped view of beauty in depicting the difference between desireable/undesireable. Mistakes were made in costuming, especially given Paltrow's character portrayal. Rosemary, true to life, would have never worn some of the outfits presented... only Hal's vision of her would have. Continuity came at a cost of losing realism. Use of stereotypical misconceptions became a reflection of the screenwriter's ignorance rather than a contribution to comedy when Rosemary claimed to have only had one previous boyfriend in her life. This did not serve a purpose like the slapstick comedy achieved through the breaking of furniture. HOWEVER, I enjoyed the movie. It was a fresh idea and both Black and Paltrow established their characters well.

This is a very funny movie with a great message. It's a bit of a departure for the Farrelly Brothers. They've created a movie with a lot of heart. A film that women will love as much as their bathroom humored boyfriends and husbands do. Go see it with someone you love.

If you liked There's Something About Mary, then you should enjoy this movie. While the movie may make you think that it is in reference to big people, the humor actually lies within the stupidity of Jack Black's character, and the ignorance and intolerance of many. I highly recommend this movie if you are a Jack Black fan, and if you're interested in seeing Gwyneth Paltrow in a different role.
