The concept behind Oglio's Sex-O-Rama: Music from Classic Adult Films is certainly clever enough: it offers a selection of instrumental highlights from '70s and '80s porn flicks, the ones that were notorious for churning wah-wahs, whining synthesizers and white-funk beats. There was only one problem -- it was difficult to track down the original instrumental recordings, which meant that the original films had to be used as source material. As it turned out, it was impossible to separate the music from the actors' heated voices. Since they wanted to spotlight the music, not the sex, Oglio hired a studio band to recreate the music from the films, taking the utmost care to use the same vintage instruments and amplification that made the original soundtracks so funky. Unfortunately, the desired effect wasn't quite achieved -- like Sex-O-Rama cover model and '90s porn superstar Jenna Jameson, these new re-recordings are attractive and well-constructed, but lack the low-rent grit of the orig...inals. Still, it's the best that Oglio could possibly do, considering the source material, and it's better to have a substitute than nothing at all. And Sex-O-Rama is entertaining -- the scores certainly show more imagination than was necessary -- but for anyone looking for a kitschy, gaudy nostalgia trip, the disc isn't quite going to satisfy their needs. - Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide Read more Less
