Sex & The City - The Gals Are All Right

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Aug 17, 2001 | 4 out of 4 found this Sex and the City: The Complete First Season (1998) review helpful

Think of them as the female version of the Who. Given that they don't shove Cadillacs into the local Holiday Inn or smash guitars, the ladies (not girls - these are women approaching 40) certainly parallel the band. The wild Samantha defines the wild...ness that Keith Moon once had. She beds anyone, any sex, and can contort into different positions. Unlike Moon, who died of a drug overdose, Samantha keeps on going without a beat, but is vulnerable. Then we have Miranda, the John Entwistle of the group who stood there and watched all the chaos going on. Ever the cynic, the first season shows Miranda as the ultimate crank, finding fault with just about everything. (By the time season four rolls around, the short, severe hair has grown a little longer, and Miranda has become a little softer with the death of her mother (perhaps the best of any SATC episode I've ever seen - Cynthia Nixon's finest hour) and a baby on the way.)Charlotte is the Roger Daltrey of the quartet. Charlotte might be sweet and cute eye candy, but don't let the innocence fool you. Cross Charlotte the wrong way, and she has no qualms in cutting you down to size. That sweet smile will either roll into a snarl or break down into tears. And finally, the Who would not be complete without Pete Townshend, and the ladies would be kinda boring without Carrie. The only thing I don't like about Carrie is that she tends to be a little whiny, but she is the inquisitor, the person asking the hard questions (when Miranda asks them, it's usually with a jaded eye and a cocked eyebrow) and finding out the crux of their love lives. Carrie's monologues could come straight from the great philosophers, but someone's got to ask 'em - and Carrie certainly does. The first season seemed a little dark at first, with Miranda being her usual sharp-tongued self, Samantha being Samantha, Charlotte being a wee bit wayward at times, and Carrie in the middle, observing each incident with a steady eye - and her meetings with Mr. Big start to blossom. You might want to try the second season as well - it's much better written, and Carrie starts to wonder what she finds in Mr. Big. (The Hamptons episode is excellent - it not only touches on the loss of Mr. Big to a younger rival, but also the way friends band together on the beach.)All in all, I'm glad I found the series, and compared to the silly network shows that dance around the topic of sex, SATC stares it straight in the face, growls at it with some profanity and anger, and then releases it with a lesson everyone can learn - females and males.(For the record, I'm male. And I like Miranda the best.) Read more Less

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Dec 4, 2003

Pros: Their show ideas, the sex, and the show period is great!

Cons: I think they need a new colthing idea because the one that they have is not working try a new look.We ALSO WOULD LIKE TO SEE MORE OF THE MALE BODY PARTS.

Well I think that your show is amazing it gives any woman or young lady ways to handle situations. It also gives you a better way to look at things, your show has influnced me so much that I never have the chance to suffer through hard time with my p...ersonal life.I've learned how to handle an event when I'm SINGLE OR DATING. That's why I rate you excellent woman not only a top 5 but at the rating of a top that has no number to explain what you do for us and for that I thank you so very much.
